Here's another mystery find from the haunt. I liked the paintjob but have never seen this particular HO gon before.
It's kind of crude and lightweight. No weight, and no ID marks. Instead of a brakewheel there is a lever cas into the end. The couplers are body-mount, trucks are sprung. I *suspect* but do not *know* that the trucks are original, but the one on the brake end was missing springs so I rebuilt it with Kadee coupler springs (a terrible idea, BTW). Note the filled, undersize stirrups.

So.... anyone know this guy?

By looking at the coupler pockets,I would say late Varney,or early Life-Like. Not totaly sure though.

Varney was my first thought as well, based on the coupler pockets.

Gilbert? I don't think I'd have guessed that. Perfect timing too, it'll go well with the Gilbert B&O loco I posted about and fixed recently.
What did the pipes look like?
Thanks for the ID!

ah... so not Tyco pipes, then. Figured as much.
Incredibly, looking at those coupler pockets jogged my recollection of another item in my collection... a caboose I long thought was simply a very early Varney because it had stamped metal end cages. I picked it up as a curiosity from the haunt like 2 years ago for $1.
Sure enough, it's a Gilbert... and it's B&O - a set-only item to match the engine I just picked up. Wow! Add this C&O gondola to the mix, and it's as if this little consist was meant to come together piecemeal. Neat.

I didn't even need the pic to open all the way to figure it was a Gilbert. Scored a Gilbert C&O RSD15 at a show in the fall, guy didn't realize what it was I guess - it's even the one with the ringing bell in it.
FWIW, there are four truck variations on Gilbert HO freight cars. Some cars were made for them by Varney, and even when they went to their own dies Varney trucks carry over. Then there is the variation above, which is like Varney but has slots in the center screw hole for the axle wipers used on the 0-6-0's tender and on cabooses. Variation three is a solid cast frame that's somewhat shorter in height at the spring section. And later, some Gilbert pieces were made from the same dies as Marx HO, so they use that snap-on plastic truck assembly.
Generally Gilbert made by Varney has the same coupler cover and rivet as the car above, and will have a different (usually 3-digit) number. The CB&Q hopper with a 525 on it is probably the most common one. A Gulf tank car is also fairly easy to come by.
Gilbert, however, is the one HO I wish there was a decent guide for. I keep picking it up in bits and pieces and I'm never sure what's really rare.

YOu know, there are some guides out there, you just need to look on....The Internet
http://www.gilbertho.org/
There's another site somewhere I Bookmarked, but with my thousands of BM's, you think I can find it right off the bat? Nah. Anyway, this one is decent.
I, too, had started in 2010 to seriously try to collect various HO makers to complete an entire train - I'm currently working on Gilbert, Playart, Varney, Lionel, Train Miniature, among others. I also need to get all those pieces in ONE PLACE so I know what I have. I can probably make a Lionel HO consist now, and I can do a Train Miniature as well. The others I'm not sure I have enough pieces ( ie, either engines or cabooses ) to make up each end totally. But, it's a lifetime project. Glad to see others interested in Gilbert as well.
