Taking the venerable ( and stuck ) PT motor apart tonight, I found out why it wouldn't move - one of the brushes had become "stuck" to the armature's copper pads, and there was some oiliness on the contact copper. I literally had to pry it off, and left some carbon on the pad. I think it might have overheated and partially welded itself to the pad. Carefully scraped the pad clean of carbon bits, and then Q-tipped them with alchohol and burnished them with a green scrubby pad piece. Scraped the brushes clean with the exact-o blade, they were fairly thick, hence not worn out. Reinstalling them and screwing down the side plate, I got out my spare power pack, and touched both motor contact patches - a rewarding whir started slowly, then it picked up speed at the 3/4 setting I had it had. After about 20-30 seconds it was running faster. Deciding not to take it apart any further for now, I reinstalled it in the Amtrak shell and soldered the wires back to the motor, and placed it on my new battery-powered test track bed, formerly a Casio keyboard bottom shell. Had to push down to get it to move, then I reinstalled the weight, and it moved slowly down the test track. Ok, it's moving. That's more than my other GG1 I have is doing, and it's in better shape! ( Although the motor had seized, and gears broke off, I need to replace it, haven't finished that project yet ). So at this point, I do have a powered Tyco GG1 that's working. Yay! It might not be breaking speed records, but it is functional again. Not bad for $3 and 20 minutes worth of work. I'll have to get back on the other one, so I can have a pair of them working.
