Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail, Nor heat of day, nor gloom of night...
The Night Mail! A set named for its RPO proved impossible to resist and this IHC Reading version is a perfect example. Since the mail car is of the non-operating variety, a little imagination will be needed but that's no trouble. The two Tyko kits are nice inclusions and lead me to ask how an interlocking tower differs from a signal tower? Answers in the post!
Now I'm off to set it all up and see how she runs. Will snap a picture later of the 2-8-0 for LOTW. Be there!

It's weird, microbusss. IHC engines, passenger cars and structure kits were fairly common around here but IHC freight cars and vehicles are really rare. I guess it's whatever the local distributor chose to import before they went bust.

Mantua "Record Breaker Set". I picked this off of Ebay on a Buy-It-Now for $20. It also came with a NIB MRC transformer. The seller had the engines and cars loose. When the box arrived it was in the Mantua set box. Too my suprise!!!

An Amtrak freight set. Unique! And in ABB to. That's a lot of horsepower in a brilliant set, AF Kid. Tell me more about the B unit dummies, please; Are they much heavier than a normal freight car? Could you adapt them to provide extra electrical pickup?

The "B" Units have the standard metal weight block. The same as all Mantua "A" Units. The "B" units also have a die-cast metal base. Also the slots on the side of "B" are higher than the RedBrown Box era "B" units. This "B" unit will not take the older trucks. I did build a double motor "B" unit using the old MU eninges on an older shell. At the last Allentown train show I did find a NIB Mantua Amtrak enigne that was a factory original double motor "A" unit and the box was marked as such. Here are some pics of the "B" unit underside.

AF Kid, thank you for posting all the details on your B units. I have a non-powered E7B that weighs a tonne for no reason and I wondered if all B dummies were the same. I think a Manuta F7B dummy might suit my MetalTrain F7A's quite nicely. Thanks for the underside pics as well, very useful.

There is a set like mine but in Conrail on Ebay currently. Do a search under Mantua and you might find it. I usually see some Conrail "B" units on ebay but other road names are not that common.

Hi All,
I really love the amtrak set. I have hunted the Tyco amtrak F unit for years with no luck. I have the interlocking tower as well, It is doing duty as a guitar shop, LOL! It's kind of cheezy but fun.
I think I have shared this Snap On set before. The updated pictures are much better though. I'm going to guess that this set is from 1998 since the engine is #1998. I think we picked this up at a flea market a couple of years ago.
Thanks for sharing. Mike
