Here's a nice example of the Chattanooga 638, in a box, WITH the smoke fluid and a funnel? All there. Got the caboose with it, too. Looks pristine, hardly if ever run. Super clean all over. I think the $100 I spent for a bunch of HO and N gauge train lot items was well worth what I got.


I've heard a lot about these 638's recently, and now I just got a sweet one. Worth the wait.

Tyco GG-1 found about fifteen minutes ago at a local antiques shop.

I don't even have a layout together, and I'm already modifying it, thinking of adding catenary . . . I guess these pantographs don't actually conduct power, though. Has anyone ever converted one to draw juice from the pantographs?
It's squealing when run; I guess a clean and lube is in order.

Here's a recent ebay find. It's an old GP7/9 with a Pittman motor. I don't know much about these...were they replacements/upgrades for the Hi-Fs?

Doesn't run too bad. A little noisy, and occasionally gives a funny growl on a curve, but fairly smooth from slow to fast.

Nice, I have one...using the pantographs should be an easy mod...just jumper wire it from the real wire uppers to the motor along those plastic arms, maybe with a varnished light wire I.e. wire unwound from an old motor armature. That's my plan anyway...

Hi B77. If there is a Pittman motor with a flex shaft to the truck. It is a Penn Line Engine. Athearn sold their shells to Penn Line.. Milwaukee and Wabash were 2 road names used by Penn Line for their GP9s.. Athearn also supplied F7 Shells... Penn Line also did some engines and cars with other companies. Like Fleischmann, Varney, Hobbyline, and Mantua.. Carl

That's a nice model, one of my favorite little switchers. You sure you don't want to paint it? My wife gave me an undec just like that a few years ago for a specific project I had in mind. Here's the result:

Needless to say, for an unheard of short line like the F&C, I had my work cut out in making the decals. I was very pleased with how they turned out.

Oh, magnet wire? That's a good idea. I think I actually have a spool of that stuff around here. I was going to wind a guitar pickup from scratch once, and found this stuff wasn't thin enough. I'll have to give it a try.

Since you like to keep score, I still have the footboards on mine and the horn is wrong too. To be fair I didn't forget, just didn't have the right parts on hand at the time. OK, since it was built I've since forgotten. But I do have another photo of the unit without the bell, although I can't remember if that was *after* the logo was applied to the nose (as it is on my model).
The F&C is a ghost line today, it still exists if you know where to look but the tracks were pulled up in 1987. The former main used to run a block or two from my house. It used to be known as the "whiskey line" because for the last decade of its life its sole reason for being was serving the distilleries in the area. I've a few spectacular photos of F&C trains running jumbo centerflows with empty boxcars as spanners across some of the scary-high bridges that used to exist along the line.
In 1985 or 1987, a derailment knocked the bridge to the Jim Beam distillery out of commission. It was too expensive to fix, so the parent Pinsley Corp (which operated several short lines) abandoned the line. The tracks were removed in 1987. The bridge abutments, pilings, tunnels, and other telltale signs of the line still remain.

Beautiful S2, akagic! Pardon me AMC, is that the Chattanooga Choo Choo? Can't beat the classics. Microbusss's Bay City E-Liner of last week inspired me to splash out on a rake of corrugated passenger cars for my own 3rd-hand E7:
 The Rocky Mountain! It's a 2nd run, Proto 2000 EMD E7A with a non-powered E7B unit - my 1st dummy for LOTW! Apart from a few wonky grab irons and such, this AB set's in pretty good nick and runs like a charm.

Thanks, microbusss. It's great your E7 is working, I hope you use it more than I've used mine in the past. Now though, I can race my UP E7 against my Santa Fe PA. First to reach L.A. is the winner!

Are the E7 chassis's hard to find? I've got 4 shells, no running gear, B&O 1001 is one roadname shell I have which I'd like to get a chassis for, but I've never seen a "long" chassis at train shows for it. I'm not sure if mine are even Tyco or now. I know the Tyco version uses the standard power trucks, not sure about other manufacturers. How do I know which E7 chassis to buy for my shell, and are they rare/expensive to get? EDIT - I think my shells are Rivarossi, judging by some of the Ebay auctions I perused a few weekends ago identifying the roadnames and numbers.

hey AMC My E7 only has seperate wheels They held in by tabs & have a "ring" for steering 
 Don't worry about this pic The loco is repaired & together now

Don't know, AMC, I've never looked for an E7 chassis before. I've seen a Rivarossi GG-1 upgrade chassis for sale but I don't think that would suit. I'll keep my eyes peeled for the exact chassis you need.

Here's a picture of 3 of my 4 E7 shells. Notice on mine, compared to the Tyco version, that there's no fuel tank skirt on the shell itself. Looks like one tiny raised tab on each side holds the shell on, then one slot on the back end,and the coupler on the front. Definitely not anything like the TYco shell.

I think I got these shells at a train show, junk box, for $1 each. I liked the N&W and Amtrak versions, plus the undecorated. I've never had such a long engine before, so I just grabbed the shells. Now looking to see what fits under them. Thanks for any help, guys.

I think those are Model Power shells. Roco made them and the mechanism looks like the Model Power FA/B-1/2 and the RF-16.
