All aboard The Star-spangled Express!
Look ma, no wires! This is The Liberty Unlimited, Pennsylvania's premiere 2001 Chicago-Washington service commemorating The United States' 225 years of independence. Needing no introduction, the legendary GG-1 here in patriotic livery hauls a rake of Bi-level Bombadiers leased from the Dallas-TRE for evaluation trials. It is ironic a nation not known for traction engines would also produce one of the best and a timely reminder in troubled times of the true spirit of America.

Excellent Alco Century, catfordken. Being Roco, I guess it runs a lot smoother than most other AHM locos?
Whilst prattling on, I forgot to mention my GG-1 is a dual-motored IHC, NickelPlate79. Definitely understated compared to VintageHO's striking Rivarossi! I have a Tyco-like silver truck fetish that relishes the Conrail even though I once dated a girl who wore dental braces. DANGEROUS!
Very cute 0-6-0, romcat. Do you know what year it was made?
Bicentennnial cabeese are breeding like Tribbles! Your SD-40 looks rock solid, microbusss. A real bargain!

Micobusss, not only did you get a great deal on that SD40, someone actually installed the handrails properly. I'd say that makes it close to a miracle.

Steel music wire is the strongest. Hard to bend, but it really holds up. You can use brass as well. MY LHS sells steel music wire in 3" sections at various diameters, so I always have some on hand. Also good for drilling & pinning broken plastic parts, like horns, bells, steps, etc.
Most metal handrails are made from .020" dia wire.

K & S Enginering mades the best selection of items for your many needs. From Sheet metal to Brass tubes and sheets of brass and Music Wire.. Most Hobby stores and Craft stores usually have it.. I have also seen displays of their items at True Value and Ace Hardware. Here is a link to their Page of Items.. Carl

I'm going to look for that wire. I've got some handrails to make.
Here's my LOTW. This is one of the things that I stood out in the sun all day waiting for at the last auction. I got it in a box with a bunch of unbuilt rolling stock for $20. The b-unit was in another box that I got for $12, which was packed with passenger cars.

Tyco Hand rails are .0225 in dia. This = gauge 9 or 23AWG size wire. The finish is called bright finish. Stainless steel would be the best material. I have been looking for a while for this. If anyone is successful please post where one can obtain it. It does come in small rolls of 1' to 20' if you can find it.

Roundhouse started production on the 0-6-0 in the late forties and you could get the kits up until the mid Seventies. I believe that it is based on an SP prototype. A friend built a later run and used a can motor. That engine runs like a watch to this day. They were kind of sparse in the detail department but Roundhouse engines were simple to build and would be very reliable once you got the kinks out.
