Re motor Tyco
Wednesday, November 10, 2010

Can anyone tell me what motor I need to re motor my Tyco's. I have read all your forums and am still confused on which motor I should be looking for.
I did one with an old CD motor and it runs good .
But I'm not sure what motor I should be looking for.
It would be nice to get some(6) with a 1mm shaft as I screwed up 2 power gears trying to drill them out to 2mm.
I find this site very helpful as I just sit back and read all the forums. I have copied several and of course the vids they are great.
If anyone can help me out with the right info I would be one happy old man.

You can get these motors by going to your local electronics shop I get them here for $.50 each.I picked up 6 on Saturday for #3.00 NO TAX THEY WERE USED. Some have 2mm shaft others have 1mm shaft. I have changed 3 in my Tyco Choo's and they work great. I have a Tyco shifter and I think I will try one in it as they pull like a DOZER.

You're lucky if you still have local electronics stores. They've all but disappeared around here.

Check this place out for cheap electric motors:

They've got the Mabuchi FF-130SH for $1.25. They sell on eBay for almost $4. And if you've got more room, they've got more powerful motors than that.

Since the pinion gear is the issue for shaft size, do you resize yours, and if so, HOW do you hold such a tiny gear and drill it accurately?

I made a jig to hold the gear so I can drill them. It takes a lot of time and you have to be careful but it works for me and the engine runs fine with no wobble of the gear. I made the jig out of a scrap of hardwood and pined the gear with pins. I used several pins almost one in each tooth so not to screw up the gear. I drilled a hole in the wood the same size as the outside of the gear and deep as the gear and it worked fine. I find the motors that use higher volts pull a lot better. I'v done 3 now and they all work great. Who says the old power toque motors don't pull I just don't tell people that they have a can motor in them.LOL
