I just acquired this in a junk box purchase. the motor is fine, drive rods need fixing. Question is, is it worth trying to find a shell and the parts for it? I think these are hard to DCC, due to the need to totally disassemble the chassis to get to the motor and isolate it. May just run it as is. Just wondered if the Spectrum series was the good one which didn't fall apart or bind up, or not.

Shame to waste a decent chassis that still runs.

I have one with broken running gear. I'm gonna send it backt o Bachmann for a replacement. They have a straight swap out program so I understand...

I believe this is an early Spectrum K4, as I have the same loco. What's amazing is that the only thing wrong is the broken valve gear hanger and missing cylinder, instead of split axles like your 0-6-0. Still, I've never had the axles on any of my Bachmann steamers split, so either I take good care of them, or I've just been lucky.
That's certainly worth something to someone who needs a running chassis for their K4. or as Gareth mentioned you could send it to Bachmann and for $15 get the latest revision. Finding just a shell and the other missing parts might be hard to find, unless you can get one with split axles on eBay cheap.

And also considering my club member routinely dumps locos like this in his drawer units out helter-skelter, with no care whatsoever. We even found a few weeks ago a Tyco cab for a 2-6-0 that I needed, and it was TOTALLY unbroken, and he'd thrown that bin around so many times...even HE was amazed it was still unbroken, too.

Saw one on Ebay last night for $15. I will take a pic of it with me to Timonium MD show, maybe I can find a lone shell for it. I've also got an early N&W J Bachmann, pre-Spectrum, with split axles. Shell is gorgeous. I WANT a J class in my collection, but don't have the money to dump into one right now. I may try to fix the axles enough on that one to make a siding queen out of it.

Then again, the shell alone is $25; for ten dollars less you can send the whole thing in to be repaired/replaced . . .
If they send you the right one. I sent in a 2-6-0 Mogul a few weeks ago (split nylon axle bushings) and the other day an 0-6-0 came back. Resolution is pending.
