Gilbert HO Piggyback Unloader. Platform is virtually identical to the S gauge version. There is a cardboard brick patterned ramp that the track goes on to bring it to the proper level. Car is not the same as the 33509 trailer flat although both flats share the same trailer. Hard to find accessory in complete condition and boxed.

I love passenger sets and this is one of my favorite sets Gilbert made. This is the 1957 version with the matching B unit. I also have the 5 digit version and the Pikemaster version, with extra coaches and vista domes for them. This set is nice but the original owner thought it would be easier to put back in the box if the horns weren't there.

Here is the hardest Alco to find out of the three they made. This is the non-bell ringer C&O #31017 in its original box. The demonstrator model below it although common in it's normal form is unusual in that the gray roof vent was never painted gray!

Here's the hardest prewar locomotive to find in one piece. Most of the die cast driver equipped Hudson's self destructed due to poor quality castings. This one is in remarkably good original condition and only shows a little bit of deteriorating in the drivers. The tender shell is imploding and the tender chassis I had to repair but I have a decent replacement.

The second picture is the same die-cast driver Hudson with the more common brass rimmed Bakelite driver variation, also in excellent original condition.

Quite an education here, Ken. Thanks for the thread.
Would it be fair to call Gilbert the predecessor of

I added a Gilbert Karo Syrup tank car today. It is number 33312 a 1956 car. I never thought I would find one of these but sometimes you just get luckey. As you know I am very into HObbyline trains and I got 2 Union Switch and Signal gondolas from him also Which are uncatalogued, with other HObbyline cars also.

Here is the list.

Wayne NJ train show, 10-10-21
Gilbert Karo Syrup tank car CCCLX 33312
Globe/Athearn, Union 76 tank car
Ulrich flat with SP trailer
HObbyline T&P flat car
HObbyline Union Switch & Siginal gondola 3758 (This is a specal uncataloged car)
HObbyline Union Switch & Siginal gondola 3758 (This is a specal uncatalogued car)
HObbyline 0-4-0t powered, undecorated.
MDC SSW ballast car SSW 70790
MDC SSW ballast car SSW 70790
Pocher GN snow blower X-1510
AHM, C. of G. watermelon car, for parts or repair?
Revell EJ&E boxcar 4009
HObbyline TP&W 6014 boxcar
Rivarossi NYC 174478 pacemaker boxcar

Congrats, toptrain, as the Karo tanker is hard to find. It goes to prove that you never know what you'll find at the train show. Have you been able to find the Sohio or Cities Service tankers?

Brain; Was that cities service tank car a cataloged item? The gilbert site says no! Is it listed and seen in some Gilbert catalog. Again NO! I do know this to be true. Was the Sohio cataloged? Yes. They are even pictured in a AHC add as well as a catalog. Are these just items made to be shown at a corporate meeting as possible production items? No! They are produced for exclusive sale by Cities Sercice as THEIR train set! Even the Gilbert site has appropriate words of warning concerning this car. Who would buy a car like this on eBay for a large amount of money, with no way of proving it is authentic. Most eBay sale are by people who make statements like " Of course it is like I say because my father told me!" WOW how can you top that! These cars must be thought of as just custom and priced accordingly always as a good copy. If not, "let the buyer beware!" iF I want to run or own A CITIES SERVICE TANK CAR, It would be one of another manufacturer, or i would make it myself and number it differently.

I'd never seen this thread before, truly some remarkable stuff,
like that Alco demonstrator. I was only vaguely aware of Gilbert,
and did not know they made HO trains. Beautiful examples, and
to think that a lot of it, as Ben has pointed out, were made
when those Flags were still flying.

toptrain,

You are correct about the Cities Service tank car - there are a lot of forgeries and people are buying them up. The last one (that I know of) sold for $1,000.

I got a City Service tank car. Going to check on the
manufacture but pretty sure it isn't Gilbert.Who
in the world drops a K Note on a cheaply made old
toy? Well, me, just spread out a bit. If by some miracle
it is a Gilbert, that puppy is going to eBay!!
