Hey all,

Another hanger queen in my collection. Picked this up off of eBay a while back.

Not sure what it is. It says made in Yugoslavia in the bottom, with what I belive is the AHM symbol, not sure though

Lights up, but doesn't run. Haven't got around to pulling it apart yet. Too many other projects ahead of it

Any help would be appreciated, including tips on how to get it running again. (unless someone has some tanker cars they would like to trade)

Cheers, Ian

It's a FAIR representation of an Alco C-628. You notice the huge filter box is missing from behind the cab on the roof?

G,

No, actually I didn't. Shows you just how much I still need to learn about locomotive identification

I have an SD40-2 that was in an Eckhard kit. It has the identical drive line and frame. Mind said Mehano on the bottom. The loco runs very well and the driveling is smooth. Unfortunately since the frame is plastic it is to light to pull many cars. I repainted mine in a generic paint scheme.

Is the symbol you're referring to the triangle made out of three smaller triangles? I assume it is based on the "Yugoslavia". That would mean your engine is made by Mehano A number of North American companies imported Mehano, including AHM.

Definiely a Mehano, which was sold under many different brand names. I've got a few similar locos. This is what I referred to in another thread as "the Mehano-y" build. They're light, flimsy, and all plastic. In my experience, they run great when new....although not the strongest pullers. However, the older "used" ones I own are a little trickier and sometimes need a "nudge" to get going, despite all my cleaning.

All you can really do is clean the motor and wheels, then lube the gears, unless you want to try repowering it. Tyco actually used a similar one of these as a substitute in their final train sets. I've got that one, and it gives me all kinds of grief. If I clean the motor it runs well, but if I let it sit it needs that "nudge" to get going. The plastic handrails got broken so easily I finally got sick of it and put it on a shelf. On the other hand, I've got a MIB Model Power version of a RS-2 that 's similar inside, and is a joy to run.

For reference, it should handle 6 or so cars easily, a few more with some slippage at startup. It won't do any more than that without modification.
