Two nights ago I was running some trains and noticed a burned plastic/electrical smell. I thought somebody was burning trash or something, thought nothing of it, and it went away. I forgot about it until last night, when I went to operate a switch and nothing happened. Inspection of the Atlas switch machine revealed this:

It's completely melted a hole in the top, and it's sagging through the bottom. I'm sure I hadn't even operated that switch the night before, because it's on a siding where I park my passenger train. After I took the switch machine off and made sure the wires were secured and separated, I pushed the switch lever a couple times. I noticed that the power light on the transformer flickered as if a switch was attached, but nothing was attached to it. I'm thinking the lever is bad, maybe sticking or something.

Anybody seen this happen before?

Your switch lever stuck, not common but it does happen. That's why many modelers go to momentary pushbuttons.

Even pushbuttons go bad and remain shorted giving the same results.
