oh yeah no kidding Which is why I stay OFF the tracks when exploring or when I took pics of 844 I walked 100s of feet in front of it & always looked both ways before crossing the tracks Also helps to know the train schedule Which doesn't work all the time

I will never understand how people can get hit by a train walking. They are very noisy and the virbration on the ground should awaken anyone. To add the "ghost hunting" piece to it adds even a bit more ridiculous stupidity!!

I wish I could agree with you Walt...I was walking alongside the UP main the runs along the Escambia Bay in Pensacola when I came upon a very narrow cut. I had to either walk the ditch by the tracks, putting me uncomfortably close should a train come--or--hike up and over to get around. As I turned to see if anything was behind me, I stared into a four unit consist pulling a 100+ car train coming up on me fast not 20 yards away. I did not hear it until it was within a few feet, no doubt because of the easy downgrade from the bridge it has to cross to get there. I will never walk a line again because of that moment, simply way too close for me...and unbelievably silent.

Shay:

a) Glad your safe

b) Why did they not ring the Diesels bell? Did they not notice you hadn't seen them!!!???

c) I didn't read the story that the link went to. I read the headline because I couldn't understand the title of the posting. Such postings to me at least are just not appropriate here. Is it really interesting how someone met there death by coming into contact somehow with a train. I don't think so. What possible benefit can there be? Perhaps if someone is more cautious and less ambivalent in that situation it'll be beneficial. I hope so.

Leaving work years ago with a RR crossing just one city block away, I noticed a small crowd standing around something on the tracks. I was shocked to see a teen boy from a nearby handicap school laying in a grusom pile between the rails. No emergency vehickle had arrived yet. The harsh reality of a leg with a boot up the tracks a few feet , and I'll stop there.
The odor, and horror, of what these trains we so enjoy, have to offer when humans get careless around them.

This boy was crossing two tracks. One westbound train had just passed and he stepped onto the eastbound tracks ans was struck. I had never witnessed anything like that before and hope to never again....

Listen to what Shaygetz is saying - he is a "train person" (I won't say "foamer") and even though very aware of what he was doing, was taken unawares by a consist. I've told friends that it is a phenomenon of sorts, really a function of physics, but trains approaching you can be almost silent. Here in Chicago, most people that walk in front of the trains do it on purpose, but there are those few accidents that happen because someone walked around a parked train because they did not hear another train coming. ALWAYS look both ways, even if the crossing gates are up! Cheers!

Personally, I would be lying to myself if I told myself that. I lived 9 blocks from the railroad in my hometown. I could hear trains running thru town or even just idoling sitting on the tracks.

Maybe it's the difference in peoples minds and awareness, but I am certain about one thing. If I'm walking, a train will never, come up behind me , without me hearing it, or feeling the vibs... or knowing it.s there .... It just cant happen.

He probably thought I was out of the way enough that it wasn't necessary at that time...if I had gone into that cut or looked like that's where I was headed, he might've. As it stood though, we waved to each other as he passed and pulled on his horn. I'll never forget how absolutely silent that beast was as close as it was.
