Hey Guys:
Do any of you own a Rivarossi 2-8-4 "Brkshire"? If so can you tell me what it operates like and if it has the old "pizza cutter" flanges or not?
Thanks, Gareth

I have a pair of them that I rebuilt. I agree that in stock form they are a bit guttless. A NWSL regear abd motor transplant does wonders though, The flanges are a bit large. (see the photos in the Link) http://www.2guyzandsumtrains.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=1004.html

I have a 60's version with a ball bearing motor. It runs well with the bearings cleaned and adjusted, and has a decent amount of power. A NWSL regear kit will drop the speed and increase torque, but it will also increase motor noise. They did revise them in the 90's with RP25 blackened wheels and Japanese can motors, and I've heard very good things about them, assuming you can find one.

Sounds like all you guys have the earlier ones.
Is there anyway to visually distinguish the 90's RRosi Berks? I guess the flange size, but that's hard to see on an ebay pic? Any other way? For example is the box different? anything about the wheel style/size I expect these are 69" HO scale drivers on the NKP Berk. Any superstructure differences?
Thanks, Gareth

You can't miss the small flanges and blackened tires even in a bad auction photo. The handrails and stanchions are also blackened, and they will come in a red Rivarossi box.

I have a 70's era AHM distributed model. Picked it up at a train show in beautiful in-box condition for next to nothing. Performance-wise, mine is quiet, powerful, does not stall on switches, and has great details. A fantastic locomotive which handles 8 passenger cars with no problem. The flanges are typical 70's era Euro...a bit deep, but my model seems to run fine of code 83 rails (shorter rails) as well as traditional code 100. The only code 83 the wheels pick are on some rerailers ...no other issues.

Fastest way to notice the difference is the old one has the motor in the cab......and seen easily, and the newer one has the cab open and completely detailed, with the motor completely unseen inside the boiler with an attached flywheel!
I've gotten 4 of the old ones, and 1 of the new ones.....Repowered old ones, add as much weight as possible, and a good power plant and will pull pretty good. The newer ones with the newer motor and flywheel drive run great as well.....
And guys, that "Japanesse" motor is a Mashima! A VERY GOOD power plant.
And no, I have no connection to Hornsby OR Rivarossi.
