This is my little rant cause I do not understand people buyers and sellers at train meets, eBay, and yard sales. Sometimes you go looking for stuff and you get a sweet deal on something like I picked up 30 or so really nice operating Tyco dump cars for about 8-10 bucks a piece. All on eBay... Now I go on and look for some more and I see these custom painted ones that are really crappy and I mean crappy and the guy wants 35 bucks each for them wtf. I see this with alot of items like Hobbytown kits I scored a bunch of them for cheap also I got 7 or 8 kits mint for 45 bucks each the guy really hooked me up... But now I try and buy even assembled ones and can not touch them... I bid 60 someone bids 61 I bid 70 someone goes to 71, one time I even risked it and I went to 100 and someone bid 101. What is going on the economy is crap and people are spending crazy money on stuff, and listing stuff at really high prices and not selling them what a waste of listing fees. I have stopped going to train meets cause it is the same people every damn time trying to sell junk there is this one guy who has like 100 different ho cars all busted up and has them all priced individually over 15 bucks. Cary cast metal shells are another thing, about 5 or so years ago I was on a hunt for them so I picked up one after another on eBay cheap I got 12 sw1500 shells and never paid over 20 with shipping. Now I go and look I saw one go for over 100 dollars, so I listed one of mine for kicks and got 65 for it. It is not like there is a shortage of this stuff either but what is going on... Sorry bout this guys but I had to get this out there do not feel like you have to respond.

The economy in the States in particular is skittish. Average price here in Canada is more but Stable as is the economy...
On another note are any of your Hobbytowns for sale? Complete or parts are good. I need in particular an RS-3/RSD-4/5 Long hood.
Thanks,
Gareth

Hey Adam:
What are the different kinds of HT RS-3/RSD-4/5 long hoods? I only know of the metal which is what I'm after and the later plastic one.
The guy in Jersey (lived there for 5 years, loved it!) it's not "MrHobbytown" is it? I'm after an FA/FB set with the drive shaft connection. Not usre what else I need. Was the a "PB" unit that you're aware of btw?
Oh while I'm at it Do you have any spare Cary GP shells? I think mines a 36" model I'm after a 48"(?) one as well.
Thanks, Gareth

"Was the a "PB" unit that you're aware of btw?" what is PB? You are correct on the long hood, I was thinking of the cab. They had different locations for the cab mounting screws when they experimented with different flywheel combinations. I found a long hood it is in primer could probably use a sand blast and repaint.
I think I can part with my one of many Cary gp shells, what version do you want 36 or 48? I have one that has no box, its like new just has no packaging. If you don't want the fans or detail parts let me know, bowser still sells them just not the shell anymore. I know I paid around 40 or 50 for it I would like 40 without the detail parts or 45 with them. I can negotiate let me know.

When I was a kid around 10-16 years old I could do the same thing alot of times vendors would give me a free car and stuff I think they were glad to see a kid still in to trains. Now I dont expect the free stuff never did but no one is cutting anyone a break it makes no sense. I have not been to a train meet in probably over 2 years so maybe it changed. I'm 24 now still a kid but I got a good paying job I work hard for my money and can not justify the obnoxious prices. Maybe you are right on the wait them out Idea I sort of did that with the train meets it has been 2 years. I might go to the next meet just to see if anything changed I hope so.
Romcat it is not MR Hobbytown in NJ. Howard Mosley is his name really nice guy he retired 2 or so years ago and is having a good time. He shows little interest in Hobbytown anymore I call him every now and then to try and order kits but I have not been able to get them from him in the past year or so. Maybe if I come up with a big order he might do some for me. The biggest problem for him is getting the gears, I might have a solution for that I got older kits that are junk but the wheel sets were good so I saved them. I think he might be able to press the old gears on new axles for me or mail the parts and I can do it myself.

That could be what is called shill bidding. Someone (the seller or his buddy) is upping the auction price trying to get more money. If the same item Relists shortly after the auction closes, then it could have been shill bidding. Or it could be that some people just don't like to get outbid.
Unspoken expectations are premeditated failures.

A couple things:
Yes, shill bidding goes on. I'm not saying it doesn't, but it sounds to me like ebay is just working the way it's supposed to.
They're not actually bidding that way, ebay is just going a step higher. Let's say you bid 60, then I bid 65....it's going to show up as 61 until someone bids higher than 65. 65 is not the actual bid, it's the maximum I've offered to bid. If you then bid 62, it will say you are outbid and show the bid at 63. If you bid 64, it will say you are outbid and show my bid of 65. It goes in increments like that until you bid higher than 65. It's like I've said "Hey, I'll GO AS HIGH AS 65 if it gets that high. Those numbers aren't exact, but that's the general idea. Does that make sense?
The bid you place is you MAXIMUM bid, not the exact bid at the moment. If an item starts at 99 cents, and I bid $100, it's going to show a high bid of 99 cents until someone else bids. Then it will start going up in steps until I win or I'm outbid at 100. So if you jump in and bid 1 dollar, it will say you're outbid and show my bid at 2 dollars, and so forth all the way up to a hundred. You have to keep bidding until you bid higher than me, not just higher than the current bid. It's different from a real life auction, where your bid is the actual current bid. With ebay, you place a MAXIMUM bid and then ebay manages the bids. It's like sending a friend to the auction to bid for you and telling him "I'll go as high as $10, but get it cheaper if you can."
This is why people "snipe." Realistically, nobody's first bids are that high. You wait until literally the last minute, then start bidding. Items can often be won in the last few seconds by waiting. It's not uncommon for an item's bid to jump substantially in the last 30 seconds as everyone tries to outbid each other. There are even automated web sites that will do the work for you if you enter a price.
I wanted to respond because I use ebay a LOT and have only had 1 bad transaction out of nearly 300. You just have to understand the system and be patient. There may be 10 pages of bad deals before you spot the locomotive that you can get for a buck, but it's worth it. I think the "shill" thing happens, but a lot of people jump to that conclusion too quickly sometimes.
Ebay certainly has flaws, but it's been wonderful to me. As for the high prices, remember the words of Kenny Rogers:
You've got to know when to hold'em Know when to fold 'em Know when to walk away Know when to run.
If the price is too high, move on. There will be another one later.
Discuss! I'd really like to hear some comments on this, because I may be the only ebay defender on here.

Hey B77:
Been on EvilBay I think it's 11 years this Sept. Have a 400 feedback score and that goes back to when getting feedback rareloy happened. I've bought and sold on there and it mostly works. It's changed MRR collecting in many ways. I've had only a few bad buys over the years. I wouldn't sell on EB now because of the cost and rules but it's great for buyers.
OTOH I love train shows, for the bargooooons and the BS!
