Two auctions on Ebay, one for an MDC Boxcab diesel electric, the other for a Shay steam engine, both had HO Poacher as the first two words in the Description. I found the Boxcab by accident while looking at track cleaners, and with a BIN of $9.xx ( some change ), I snapped it up, as i like those Roundhouse Boxcabs, this one runs and mostly complete. But I'm curious as to the Poacher reference. If they'd listed the engine correctly as a Boxcab, and not Box engine, it might have sold quicker to someone else. Oh well, I got it first. Just curious as to the Poacher reference. Weird. Never heard of that before, and no one in my train club could understand it, either.

HO poachers are people who hunt HO scale trains out of season. They often lurk around convention centers, hobby stores, and flea markets after hours. Flea market vendors are often awakened at night by HO poachers rummaging through their tables. In the event of an HO poacher sighting, citizens are urged to contact their local conservation department or law enforcement agency.

Actually I think they meant POCHER. A quick google search of "Pocher HO train" will get you some results.

I think the seller is doubly mistaken. Pocher was an Italian manufacturer of beautiful model cars that made the old-time 2-4-0, 4-4-0's, the Casey Jones 4-6-0, and assorted rolling stock in association with Rivarossi, who later bought them entirely. The Shay listed on eBay right now as 'Poacher' is a Roundhouse, so the seller didn't get the manufacturer or the spelling right.

Ahhhhh, that seems to fit , then. Thanks for that info, Burl77 and Nelson! I am not sure I've heard of Pocher, probably have and forgotten it again. Interesting history. Always learning more about model trains ( and real ones ) from you guys. The best part was, he so botched the description that anyone looking specifically for a Boxcab like that would never find it easily. I just found it by hunting on Track cleaner, and it wasn't anywhere near the top of the search. And the BIN killed him, too, it should have sold for way more. Oh well, his loss , my gain.

That's the way to find a good bargain, Jerry. The guy that was selling off the Golf manor Hobbies parts stock was famous for incorrect listings, so I just kept watching his auctions and snapped up some pretty good deals.

Yeah, I wonder why? About 3-4 years ago, I was seeing them sell for $10-15, then suddenly in the last few years, it's hard to find one selling for under $30, not including shipping. I've picked up one at a train show for under $15 since. But it's hard to find them anymore period. Maybe people got interested in them for some reason. Got lucky with this one. There's a Ford version on Ebay now, starting at $35 though. Too rich for my wallet right now, and I'm not a big Ford fan anyway. But I'll watch it to see how far up it goes.
