all of a sudden it stopped and started making a whirring noise.

Took the tender apart and the small drive gear had slid off the shaft enough to be out of the drive train. Pressed it back on and no more than 30 seconds it whirred again.

I''ve put a couple of drops of super glue on the shaft. so far so good.

any other suggestions

The Super Glue is the way to go, but you may have to do it more than once. Degreasing the gear & motor shaft with alcohol first helps the CA to stick.

Super glue is one way to reattatch a loose gear.
I use JB Quick 2 part epoxy.
First I degrease the motor shaft, and gear, then I rough up the motor shaft with a small file to give the JB Quick something to hold onto instead of a polished motor shaft.
Put the gear on the motor, and mix up some JB,and apply.
You only need a dab of JB,and it cures in only a few minutes.
So far I've had no problems using this method.
Hope this helps.

thanks

forgot about cleaning first and roughing up the shaft.

If it pops off again will do the process thoroughly

The big gear in the center of the photo of the first post in this topic is the gear I am looking for. Take any leads I can get. And thanks for helping on this.

Sidenote of interest...

If you find yourself in need of a smaller pinion gear, cut off the teeth of a spare bull gear, the larger one on the left, flip it 180 degrees and press it on the motor shaft. The small geared center is the same size as the pinion and mates perfectly...

/tyco/forum/uploaded/shaygetz/tycorepair5.jpg

Just turn down the geared center driver on a drill 'till it clears the new gear.

Since I am new to this forum I cannot private email any members. But I am figuring this out. The white gear is the one which I need to replace. Does anyone know where I can find one? I am attaching a couple of pix from my Tyco Steam Engine 0-8-0. Thanks.

That would be the bull gear and it's the same whether white or black. You can pull it off of any later TYCO Power Torque loco, regardless of model, they are all the same. Just look for a junker lot on Ebay.

Bull gear. I'll remember that. I may have some made. Could be useful to others. So I am bidding on the junker you suggested. Thanks.

I had the same issue with the pinion slipping off. I held it on using a dab of solder. Just have to be very carful not to get any on the teeth.
