I'm thinking about building a display layout for my Italian train and station for our show of our work from Italy this fall back at campus. Does anyone know of a "dead man switch" system for wiring that would provide power at a set voltage to the track for only as long as the button is held down? This would avoid having my precious foreign trains run all day, or suffer a wreck at the hands of a wreckless spectator. I'm thinking of simply using a cheap Bachmann pack set at a medium speed with some type of pushbutton wired between it and the track, but I'm not sure if a "momentary pushbutton" type switch delievers power for only a short burst, or as long as the switch is held.

| Go to the hardware store and buy a doorbell button. Wire it just like you said above. It will deliver power only as long as it is held down.

Yup, doorbell is a momentary switch. Any momentary switch will work. Just hook up one wire from the power pack to the track and the other to one of the terminals on a momentary switch. A third wire goes from the other terminal on the switch to the track. As long as the switch is held down the circuit will be complete and the train will run. The nice thing about a doorbell button is that they often come in a nice little case. If you buy just a momentary switch (button) from an electronics store you will need to build some kind of box to hold it. Good luck!

Thanks guys...I didn't even think of a doorbell. I'll hafta browse the electronics and hardware stores when I get to wiring the thing and see what's available.
