Hi all you Tyco aficionados
I just purchased a Southern (1st version) 0-6-0 Steam Engine on Ebay for around $10.00 with shipping.
The coupler was damaged on the engine probably from shipping and I replaced it.
The engine would not run due to a direct short.
I repaired it; the problem was a pickup tang that was misarranged and grounding on the motor case.
I got it running but it ran like a drunken hippo. It wobbled all over the place.
I disassembled the drive unit and examined the wheels and one drive wheel was out of balance due to a separation of the inner wheel. I tapped it together and reassembled the engine. I noticed that it was well lubed and that the engine looked to have very little wear on it.
I put it on the track and it ran like a gem, truly a nice little engine with its green and silver boiler and red roof on the cab just gleaming as it hurled around my track.
I wanted this model due to the motor being a Tyco Torque drive unit. I have the same motor on my Tyco diesels and they can pull around twenty cars. I wanted a steam switcher with the same characteristics. Unfortunately the steel wheels won’t grip so well and the unit spins under load. The most I can get is six cars with tender. Due to the drive wheels being the electrical pickups I really can not add any grip surface to them however the middle wheel is driven so I am thinking of machining a groove in the middle wheels for a traction band as a possible solution for pulling more cars.
Does anyone else have any ideals for achieving traction because I know the motor will make the torque to pull more cars?
What do ya all think about modifications to achieve my ends, a torque little steamer with good looks, other than it kinda looks like a shrunk down O-scale Marx from the 60’s because of the torque drive motor instead of the traditional worm gear drive. I guess that why the 0-8-0 has a driven tender. Tyco could put traction rings on the driven wheels.
Anyway if it weren’t a Tyco it wouldn’t be a toy and if it weren’t a toy I would not be tinkering with it.
Cheers
