Does anyone like the coil cars offered by Life-Like & Bachmann? I had the pictured car in the 1970s and still have the main body of it. I more recently picked this replacement up. As a kid I chose the DT&I because the "I" was for Ironton, Ohio Ironton was just 28 miles up the road from our home...

Can't say I've had any use for them, I think I have one in my collection, an aqua blue car. Most of my interests fall to the eclectic like Helium or auto rack cars, or airplane transporters. Although for my future AMC auto plant diorama I may need the coil car, among others for raw material transport.

That's a clamshell coil car, a rather rare car of Peoria and Lake Erie prototype. They were some of the first dedicated steel coil cars (coils were shipped by flatcar, gondola or boxcar previously) and were pretty much a modified gondola car. The problem with the car was the heavy clamshell doors which proved problematic when loading and unloading.

Here is 1970's Lionel HO Coil Car. They used the Bachmann Mold. The Bachman cars were common. But, the Car with Lionel stamped on the bottom Is Rare. This is one with the lionel stamp on bottom. Carl

Yup, this looks like the one I have ( although I THINK it's missing one of the clamshell doors ).

I love these cars. I got one in a Bachmann Chessie set for my birthday in 1984. I always thought it was a bit different.

Hey xf2, I think they are a pretty cool car(s) myself. I remember this thing caught my eye in Woolworth in the mid 70s. I had to have another one just like it (pictured above at top)

Mine is the orange one. It' is one of the first cars a I rebought when I got back into HO trains. I live in Dearborn, Mi just outside of Detroit. I have seen a lot of cars carrying coils of steel but never one of these. I guess the clamshells were removed after a short while on the prototypes.

There's probably no need up north to have the clamshell doors, as the steel gets delivered quickly. I've seen the clamshell cars here in Virginia, like last year, they were closed, because you're moving the raw material much further, and it takes more time, so it needs weather protection. Where you are, auto makers abound nearby, so it's probably more a hinderance to fast delivery than a plus, to deal with the doors on each car. My guess, anyway.
