I managed to disassemble a (74? 75?) Santa Fe steamer with tender, wheels move smooth, but the gear, connected to the motor, that ultimately connects to the gear that runs the wheel has a 2mm gap. When I pulled the engine apart, I did nothing to the motor/gearing whatsoever, so I'm rather stumped how this came to be. Any ideas?
Second...I have a (75? 76?) Chattanooga Choo-Choo Diesel (Yellow with red striping) I need to disassemble/clean/lubricate. How is the shell removed? I've seen shells by themselves, and see how they're 'lifted' away from the chassis, but I'm afraid of cracking the shell.

Hi - To remove your motor from shell - You can use a flat blade screwdriver to pop the black tab loose from shell - The black tab holds motor into shell - same for fuel tanks - they snap in also and can be difficult to remove sometimes - rear truck is same as front for removal. Usually when you get one side loose the other side will come out easily. AS far as gap you stated - sou8nd like the piniopn gear has slipped off output shaft some. Pinion gear is silver in color and turns main gear which can be black or white in color. Try pushing back. if it slides forward try nail polish or loc tite to hold on
