Hi all,

I am in the process of restoring a bunch of Tyco trains and am enjoying the hell out of it. I found a seller on ebay that is selling traction tires and said his buyers love them. Has anyone here bought these and you provide your feedback. 100 for $7 seems like a great deal vs the 20 tires for $10 at my LHS. He is selling heavy weight and medium weight bands. Look here...

There is a guy on here that tried them & he said they suck. I use a rubber "o" ring size 6 I believe you can get a pack of 20 for like $3-4 bucks at lowes.

I tried them a few months ago. They're awful. They're dental elastics, and they're not even uniformly shaped. Avoid them at all costs.

If you're looking for the PT sized tires, you can use hair elastics they sell at Walmart. Made by a company called Goody.

I don't know if you could use on TYCO/MANTUA due to the grooves for rubber traction rings - has anyone tried this yet

THANK YOU! I'll head over to walmart I think. I've heard good things about those hair elastics. My 2 year old daughter has some for her pigtails but they must not be the ones you're talking about cause they are too big and have sparkles in them. THANKS AGAIN!

Hey Brian. I think the idea is that the "snot" fills in the grooves and basically replaces the tire. Something like that would probably be ideal for the MU-2 motors as it would eliminate the problem of finding tires which fit. You'd also be able to apply it without removing the side frames.

If it didn't cost $25 for one tiny bottle I'd probably already have some. I do plan on trying it one day though :)

I don't want to discourage anyone, but I've tried this and the ones we have don't fit. There are probably different sizes out there, so be sure to look around. So far I haven't found any around here (Missouri) that are small enough. If anyone does, please post a pic of the packaging and tell where you found them. On the other hand, I have had modest success using the larger ones in Athearn Hi-F drives.

Cheez - If you were to apply to a power torque or mu wheel set - you would have to make sure it is applied evenly to prevent being out of round or engine would wobble more than likely once dried - didn't know that stuff was that expensive - traction tires are much cheaper for that price even for the mu motors from YARDBIRD CLASSIC TRAINS - The Calumet brand of traction tires for Tyco diesels is only around 5-7 bucks depending where you buy from. Calumet was former Stewart products

I tried dental elastics many years ago, and quickly regretted it. They turned to goo that was nearly impossible to get off the wheels. I've seen a number of people making a quick buck with these "traction tires" on eBay. Avoid at all costs.

Helm, I've heard very good things about Bullfrog Snot on the MR forum. It works as described, and given the cost of a jar, it ought to. The company says not to use it to fill traction tire grooves, but one guy did say he had no problem using it that way. It seems like it would be difficult to make an even tire, though.

I've never seen those ones before. The pack I have is a single blister pack with clear elastics. The elastics in the top bubble of your pack look like they will fit though. Let us know how they work.

The bands work just fine. I likie the look of the white ones on my chatanooga although it still could use some more weight which I will add soon. Anyone needing traction tires should definately try these out. Look for the clear ones if they have them. For $3 I didn't care that they were all different colors. On most trains, you can't even see them anyways.
