Oh, I do love a Doodle Bug. I am told there was Doodle Bug service, for a time, that ran North out of El Paso, to maybe Alamogordo, or some place, I forget. Anyways, it was called the "The Great Horny Toad Line," as legend has it that a boy was hired to sit on the front beam to sweep the lizards off the rails to prevent them from fouling the running gear.
I find them rather cute and they eat nasty bugs. They have shown up at my doorstep a time or two, and they always get a welcome.

Big news for railfans on the Tabor and Waldo: Today's manifest freight was pulled by douple-headed Prairies. Usually, the T&W uses heavy enough power to move the manifests with one engine, but today's manifest was assigned to engine number 51, a small Prairie. As it approached the hilly district around Tabor and Batey Hollow, another Prairie, engine number 52 left the Crowler W. Flahar yard to meet it as a helper.
Engine number 52 loads up on fuel for the demanding job of mainline helper service:
No. 52, the only engine on the line that's playing with a full deck, never passes up a water tower:
No, that tower's not leaning. The wide angle lens in the shutterbug's camera can give things a crazy tilt.
52 runs light downgrade to meet Number 51 and the manifest freight:
Leaning into the sharp curves and steep hills, our intrepid locomotives haul their freight up the grade out of Batey Hollow:
The double header emerges from the trees atop the railroad's ruling grade. Soon the whole train will be up the hill:
Two engines wind their train among the industries of Tabor:
The manifest freight drops off and picks up cars in Flahar Yard:
One switching move at Flahar involves such a long cut of cars, that the engines can be seen way around the head of the valley while the other end is still in the yard:
While the switching progressed, engine 98, an 0-6-0 switcher had the caboose out of the way. Now it places the caboose where the train can couple back on:
The manifest continues beyond Flahar Yard, passing through a cut in a picturesque curve:
The freight has reached level going and 51 is more adequate for the rest of the trip. Number 52 runs light, back to Flahar Yard:
It was a lot of tearing around, but the railfans and shutterbugs had a good show, today, of tough little teakettles making the grade.

Wow!! Loving on those major cool wood truss bridges, those sweeping trees, the serpentine track work, and the locomotives that the T&W has kept going all those decades. I see a '50's era Ford back in there, a Quonset hut- this layout has a feel of some back woods rail network that time forgot!

Waiting for the afternoon local to arrive.
Not a soul at the station it appears.
Only three of us wait for the local to arrive .
Finally she arrives at the station with a light passenger load.
Recently painted in splendid colors which shine in the valley.
Cool crisp air makes for a long relaxing afternoon.
Pine scents are all around us this afternoon.
The shrill sounds of her whistles signal that the train is ready to go.
Starts to accelerate as she approaches Laquinta Curve.
Her whistles echo off the hills of Tyco Falls North Carolina. I stay around to watch for the next train. Love the cool breezes here.

I used to work out of Bellow's Falls. You'd be surprised how close those images look to the real deal. The town was built on a bluff overlooking the Connecticut River, and the railroad tracks hugged the riverside under a series of ramparts and tunnels. As a boy, I dreamed of working on the Rutland, traveling some of the most idyllic forests and valleys in the United States.
A most beautiful place on the long NH and Vermont border.
