Went to the train show Sunday in Somerset NJ and had a wonderful time. Later I hiked along the CNJ Raritan Valley line and took photos at various scenic spots. Good for exercise but quite very cold. Still a worthwhile trip.
CNJ freight at High Bridge NJ.
End of my hike at High Bridge station. Train service delayed due to signal trouble west of the station.
Hours later it is dark and the cold wind has picked up. The train is now in sight with her familiar mournful whistle. She is hours late but better now than much later. What a relief.
First eight photos taken at Somerset train show with various layouts. Last photo is my layout.

That night shot is a terrific study in light. I love photos that hint at the subject, but do not reveal it.

It is nice to see the Rams back in Los Angeles. Maybe Saint Louis will get a team soon. Near there we find a familiar set slowly cruising at Effingham Illinois yesterday.
Nice warm day in western Illinois.

Shortly after the dog train meanders past the Trolley Grave Yard, the Midnight Special thunders past with a load of Sara Lee (Nobody doesn't like Sara Lee) in hot pursuit. Turbines whining, she finds her stride...
...faster and faster, the rail spikes rattle in the tie plates...
...until she rips a 120 MPH on Run 8...
...seen here ripping under the little known Midland, Texas Underground Train Way (it passes directly under John's house)...
...flanges howling as she blasts down a 2% grade around a curve...
...then her big V12 hammering a statacco that vibrates...
...the stained glass of St. Patrick's Cathedral on Heaven Hill...
...on and on an on, hurling past downtown El Paso...
...down the deadly curve of Cajone Pass under broiling California sun...
...past the subterranean Church of Microbusss...deep beneath the Nebraska plains...
 ...dusk begins to settle...
...nor dark of night will slow her toil...
 ...until...to be continued...

Meanwhile, across the river in Juarez, Mexico...
A couple of yard goats idle...
 and idle some more...
while a couple of cabeese take a siesta on the international boundary bridge...
and on the North side of the river the Midnight Special squeals around a reverse loop...
as the conductor checks his manifest...
and Big Betsy finds a place to hunker down in the roundhouse. (Mexican units by Mario Alemeida, MNS by Chops and Wildecoupe, steam locomotive property of EPMR&HA, layout by EPMR&HA, photos by Chops).

Impressive array, WKS. That trolley catenary looks especially unique. Does the trolley automatically reverse when it arrives at the end, or is it a static display?

This just in: A rare yellow Conrail 50' box car goes sailing into the village of Plasticville all the way from Zanesville, Ohio, courtesy of Walt. It was going so fast that it ripped the roof loose on the gateman's shanty.
The gateman can be seen peering out the window from the safety of the enclosure.
