While dumpster-diving a few months ago at an adjacent business to my work, I found some cut-off pieces of stairwell post sleeves. these are hollow fiberboard type of sleeves, that fit over 4x4 posts to make them look finished, and easy to paint to match. What's neat is that they have a raised "railbed" on all four sides, so you can lay your track on them and paint them or ballast them lightly. Being 3 and 5/8 inside width, they should clear most tall rolling stock, too. Here's a few pictures of one section. I'm actually cutting them to 12 inches to use to support my above-stairwell 4x4 layout / test track , instead of using red Folgers coffee cans on top of books. LOL. Here's an angled side view :

Here's an end view, where you can see the "roadbed" areas clearly :

I haven't had a need for tunnels yet, but seeing these, as long as you want straight, these would be darn near perfect for the application - strong, easy to drill and seal, etc. If anyone is really interested, I'll find that scrap of cardboard box it came in and post the maker of this particular type that was printed on the end flap I saved, too. Just thought someone might be interested in this type of material for tunnel usage.

Very novel idea there...certainly the makings of crossing a doorway there too.

That's a pretty cool idea. It would be an easy way of eliminating the big open space you see when you look through a tunnel portal of a plaster mountain.
