Well we finally did it! After more than 25 years, we dusted off the old Tyco Burlington 7310B and set it up this Christmas! Yes it still runs - but we are wondering what maintenance we should do - how to clean tracks, wheels, etc etc - any help would be greatly appreciated!

This Tyco set is all original - from the set box to the individual red boxes with orginal copper(?) track (Engine and 3 cars - all "streamliner"). Any info would be great! I know my husband bought this set new in Dallas, Texas - but that's it.

We just bought new track - Bachmann's EZ Track (nickel/silver) and it definitely runs better, but the engine seems a bit "light" or "slips" when it tries to pull 3 cars - much better at 2 cars. Suggestions? Since we don't have much space the track is a 18 inch radius.

Thanks,
Denice

Thanks Tony!
The engine is getting power - its wheels just seem to spin (not getting enough traction?) when it tries to pull 3 cars. With 2 cars, its pretty good.
Ideas?
Thanks -
Denice

If the wheels are spinning then you probably just need some new traction tires. Someone did an article on this a little while back. Check the Tyco maintenance and repair page.

Da Cheez has most likely nailed your problem correctly.

The engine wheels that do not pick-up electricity...the black ones...should have a groove in them where the wheels touch the top of the rail. That groove should be home to a small rubber-like band called the traction tire. I'm gonna guess that due to its age, you loco's traction tires have dried up and died...which is very common after many years.

They can be replaced. For around $5 you can purchase a pack of traction tires and put them on the wheels and the loco should then have more traction and be able to pull the passenger cars without so much trouble. Any good hobby shop or model train store should have traction tires or should be able to order them.

DaCheez -
Thanks - we did find that there are "grooves" for traction tires for the engine. We're being very cautious tho as it looks like everything is rivetted on this engine - we don't find a single screw!
Is there a maintenance guide somewhere for this? There is absolutely no info in the box.
Thanks - Denice

Yep - thanks - we believe the problem is "lack" of traction tires! Since I have to return a defective rerailer to the hobby shop, I'll check out traction tires too.
OK - this is addictive! ...and while we were there yesterday, hubby decided to check out tall ship models. He should have The USS Constitution kit arriving this week (online shopping is a good thing - right?)! He made one many years ago which our cats enjoyed! Luckily we're "retired"!!

Many Thanks [:D]

Many, many thanks to Da Cheez and Tony - traction tires fixed the problem! Now engine pulls all 3 cars perfectly! Our cat is in heaven watching his train go round-n-round!!

Happy Holidays!

thetycoguy,
I posted a response to your problem in Tyco motive power. Try cleaning the pick up wheels first.before getting into more complicated things. Oiling axles will help also. Avoild getting oil on electrical parts on the side of the motor.

May I ask what engine is it? It may be your traction tires that're probaly dry rotted.
