Newer couplers have a bigger hole. i cut a smal ring from a q-tip, to fit the coupler thigter to the old cars (smaller) pole.

I have used bushings cut from on old ink pen cartridge also.

Some older Bowser kits have a little bushing/ring for that purpose too. Clever Q-tip idea.

Well that's very resourceful for sure. I didn't realize what the little rings were for, on the Bowser kits. I had bought some N5c Cabooses and some PRR coal hoppers. I just happened to have save them and the sprue they came on in the kit.
