Due to the Xmas generosity of a relative I was able to acquire one of the Weyerhaeuser 2-6-6-2's recently. It ran nicely 'out of the box' - except on left hand curves. It made a grinding noise at the tightest part. Right hand curves were fine.
Assuming it was the front drive/plastic tube drive shaft binding issue I went to take it apart to replace the tube - to discover it had a differential up front.
In looking at the underside more closely I noticed the metal front drive Retainer Plate, that sits under the axles, had a 'dimple' on the outside. On taking it off I found the dimple extended to the underside as well, which meant the plate was not screwing down flat over the bearings & axles. I took to the underside dimple with a fine flat file & got it smoothed off. The loco now turns left quietly, so I imagine the axles were hopping or binding in the turn because the plate was not flat across them.
I am wondering if anyone else has had this issue with the can motor 2-6-6-2, or if I got the 1 dud Retainer Plate in the production run??
