| I just bought Great Model Railroads 2010 (out now), specifically for the writeup on this layout! I'd seen it before and to say the changes and additions are stunning is a most severe understatement. "Someday in the future" when I get to expand the STC modeling to its Chicago terminal I'd love to mimic this layout. It's like the Franklin and South Manchester set 50 years later.

I can't even comprehend how people can make their layouts look this good The buildings and road surfaces catch my attention in particular.

I couldn't get over the details on the vehicles...incredible work. Every little piece is a master model by itself.

I put this in, because someone on one of my lists wrote about the drains/catchbasins on the road, and that like the real thing, were sunken in the road to encourage drainage and ran under the curb.
I think this `genre represents the other end of the spectrum from the "Lifetime layout" someone builds for 30 years in their basement. Something small, thats superbly done is one choice and to me it makes more sense than trying to scenic 100+ feet of a basement mainline,....
Glad some of you liked it...
btw, GIC man I didn't realize the "Ducky" started in Chi-Town. Makes sense. What is it's route if you sorta have that mapped out in your head? When would you place it's origins timelnewise?

Actually the STC "started" in the fictional town of Saint Canard, which in my head is located somewhere NW of Madison, WI. Like all railroads of its day, a connection into Chicago was a must and it made sense to have a terminal there. The overall map I have roughed out has it expanding east to Detroit by way of Kalamazoo; south to KY along the IL/IN border (with tendrils into Indianapolis), and west to the Mississipi River with a terminal in Saint Louis. But it's all just a rough idea. Haven't made it all bulletrpoof feasible yet.
Haven't read the rest of GMRR 2010 yet, but it seems there's a few smaller layouts. I personally don't but it for the overall room-filling plans; the scenes and techniques can apply to almost anything.

I love street running scenes, and how he achieved the look of broken & patched concrete is beyond me. A truly spectacular piece of work, and it the production company went to great lengths to show it in all of it's glory.
The thing that really amazes me, though, is that he was able to accomplish all of this with a fully stocked bar a few feet away.

Green Frog's DVD of this layout is well worth obtaining. Check eBay, Green Frog sells there and I picked up this Street Running DVD for less than $10. Really fantastic layout!
