O Gauge diner from the 50's
Tuesday, November 28, 2000
Not sure all on this forum are interested in O gauge or Lionel layouts but would like to share a 50s diner that I just finished up with & set it in a corner of my Lionel o Gauge layout, the scene is from memories of 1957 when diners , cars, car hops & etc where a part of life for a teenager & this scene shows a 50's style diner along with curb service where girls would be on roller skates to serve food to your car & there was always a crowd of nice cars there , some to eat , some to just be there, some to look for the next drag race & some to let all listen to the loud pipes or the vroom that a 2-4 bbl or a tri-power intake would make, if you look inside on left you can see 2 girls standing at juke box as the one is showing a new dance step, 2 art counter are just giving a order to waitress, the waiter is serving a ice creme cone to a girl who is not sure if she want to eat this inside or go out to see who might have pulled in to the diner, the couple on left in booth is enjoying hotdogs, hamburger & fries along with cokes, the couple bext on right are being served their food & the guy way over on right is in deep thought as he is reading a ad on the new Ford 57 Thunderbird that came out much later in yr & matter of fact it was in Jan of 1958 when Ford came out with a factory 270hp 312ci eng & also a 300hp 312ci with a supercharger to compete with the performance of the 57 270hp Chevy which had a 2-4 bbl carbs, the guys in the front are discussing the old cp out front or could looking at the new 57 Ford, the guys on left are waiting till the girl gets finished talking on the phone & they look like its been a long enough for her to ne in phone booth, the scene on the right shows the car hops are busy serving food & not sure what the guy along side of the 55 chevy is doing, the gas station is a Plasticville building which is just for now sitting there & will be my next project, in back yo usee a picnic table for customers who wont eat in their car but want to eat outside & the RR workers also eat their lunch here as it is very convient to park the yard engine on tracks right at back of this diner, I do have a HO layout & do have a HO diner with neon signs that I want to do this coming yr, I have a colletion of Tyco trains & I do run them along with my older hobbytowns, Athearns, Varneys & etc but I still like to hear the old Lionels clickly clack along on the old Lionel tube track, smell the smoke & the ozone & watch & hear the old Lionel accessories that i grew up with, hope you enjoy the pictures of a time past but was still one of the best times this Country of America ever knew or saw , Abe

ABE : I like everything about it. The outside old dinner look. The very bussy interior. The 1950 dating. heir was still alot of steam around then. I like the way the interior is removiable to change who sits where and does what. The spaceing between everything is perfect. frank PS Way to go!!!!

I like the air conditioners and such on the roof. The confused figure standing in the parking lot is kinda funny too!
I sure could go for a strawberry shake right about now, too bad the last real diner around here was torn down last year. It looked almost exactly like this model.
Well done Abe.

You are so right as many diners were old trollies, RR cars & etc, I am sure this type of diner was on outskirts of the big cities, the old car is a old tootsitoy car with large white rubber tires tha are cracked & I didnt realize the camera would pick that up in so much detail, I to wish I could go for a a meal of 2 cheesburges, french fries & a choc milk shake, not many old diners around anymore but I do see they still have few restored & still using them on the food channel, , it was a good time to grow up in & would go back to those days in a heart beat !.................................................. Have anice Sunday Afternoon, Abe

Hi ABE!
Do you think she will be around here tonight? - Erich

People should insert coin in your diner, to hear the music play!

Erich & others, Never know who might show up in the evenings & during the night time when the 'little people' start to come & go & as for the Juke box, one of my favorite things from the 50's & used to have a seeburg in my basement for a lot of yrs playing all the oldies form the 50's & sold it when we thought we were going to move to AZ Permantely, the juke boxes are at Carsile, Pa car show every spring & fall & thats where I got mine some where in the early 80's, and yes, I would like to put some 50's music in with the diner but really didnt think about it yet, good idea ! I listened to the guitar music in the clip & am wondering who they are, I am really not into any lind of new music or groups as I never yet got out of the 50's & 60's & actualy my favorite song is Ghost Riders in the Sky from way back in 49 when a Stan Jones wrote it from a AZ desert location, still like it today can send you a cllip if anyone wants to hear a good ole song , Abe
