Found another locomotive and would you believe it was on evil bay. I was surfing along and came across this orange Booster. My mind dismissed it as being one of the multitude of UP 0-4-0's. "Bout two hours later the old mind rang an alert causing me to return and take another look> Turns out to be a Tyco 213-G in NYC MOW livery which was never cataloged and was only sold in a 1959 set. So, I bid it in, got it home, cleaned it up, did a little oiling and put it on my test track. It runs like a raped ape
Now some of you know I recently acquired a Penn Line Crusader after a life long search. GIC restored it for me and believe me, Tony had his hands full with the project. I was thrilled when I got the beauty home and have carefully packed it and its consist away cause I do have a few dollars invested in the beauty.
Back to the little beastie that cost $16.25 including shipping! Which one of these models do you think I had the most fun with this past week? And thats why its my choice for locomotive of the week!
And so it goes...

Nice piece Loop !!!
Keeping it "59" a little longer is my recently acquired 1959 Union Pacific Tyco Mikado.
/tyco/forum/uploaded/taycotrains/P1030726.jpg
I was shocked to when I took it out of the box for the picture that this model still employed a all die cast tender shell ... when did Tyco change over to the plastic tender shell ???
This is my 12th Mikado and this type of loco is by far my favorite !!! must have something to do with my obsession with Lionel Berkshires http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p103/taycotrains/P1030715.jpg

I like both of those steamers up above. Still trying to get my hands on the NYC booster that LoopnHook pictured. I had a chance to get one of those years back at a nice price but didn't.
In keeping with a theme here, here's another NYC Steamer. This one by Rivarossi, a Dreyfuss Hudson. I've always wanted one of these for so many reasons. I love Hudsons, NYC and the old Art Deco style. I picked this up at a trainshow this past May. It is cosmetically perfect without anything missing. It does not run in it's present state. I haven't taken the time yet to get it running but I'm sure I can, it's probably something very simple. It's dusty but I'll take car of that when I pull it apart to get that motor running. The fact that it did not run of course gave me a great bargaining chip. Even if I never get it running I finally got one and it can always serve as a great display model.

Nice Find Todd. You may want to check the brushes in the motor. The Rivarossi brushes go bad with age, even when they are not used. They have one brush that is Like a Screen and one Solid. The Solid brush will Disintegrate when electricity is turned on. I have bought many nice engines that did not run, and all I had to do was change the brushes. Carl

Loopy,
I'm glad you gave that NYC Booster a proper home! I saw it and drooled, but held off. I wondered, but didn't know how rare it is.
You're right, the trains that get played with are the favorites! The ones in the display cases are beautiful, but it's just not the same as hands-on fun. Enjoy.

Sorry to break the theme, but I have mostly diesels.
Here's a sorta-but not really-Tyco Alco Century 430:
I got this in a box of stuff at a flea market. There was Tyco rolling stock, a TycoPak transformer, Tyco track...and this Yugoslavian locomotive. I paid next to nothing for the box, so I didn't inspect it. I didn't realize anything was different until I got home.
According to Tony Cook's awesome site, this model was included in Tyco train sets around 1990. I guess they were shutting things down and brought in some substitute locomotives.

Todd, another issue is dirt on the brushes, and/or corrosion on the brush springs. The torsion springs Rivarossi used are susceptible to turning green and need a cleaning when they do. They also need to be properly positioned in order to ensure proper tension and electrical contact. Of the many Rivarossi motors I've serviced I've only come across one brush with a chunk missing, but they are soft and won't tolerate a lot of abuse.
The mesh brush was supposed to keep the commutator polished, but was of dubious value, so be sure to clean the commutator and the slots between the plates.
Oh, and nice locos, guys!

Hi Mike,
That is a sweet AB set you got there. Your A unit is nice and bright. I have both of the Santa Fe A units (with and without # boards) and they are both different shades of red and they have no shine. Thats OK I guess if you are going for the realistic look. I have a Chessie and a Via unit I got from Adams a long time ago that shine like no tomorrow.
Hope you enjoy the pics.
Mike

Hello Mike, thank you. Your Chessie and VIA are in mint shape, as you say, I love the shine too...
I build model cars too, I wonder what Testor's Gloss Coat would do to shine up an engine?
Hmmm, I will try it,
Mike
