...and I'd say which is which is obvious...

The opportunity to obtain the caboose was literally a shock out of nowhere - of course I took advantage. Examination of some subtle paint traits ("Cannonball" print on the rivets, and sponginess in the "o"; the paint is otherwise flawless throughout so I hesitate to call these "defects") reveals this to be the very exact same one as pictured on Tony Cook's site for years, and sold on ebay in Jan '08.
So it's not "another" one, and it's not a fake - just the very same one we all know. Nonetheless, having the real caboose to work from meant I couldn't resist a quick mockup of a junker engine to go with it. I'm certain a Tyco WC Shark *has* to exist somewhere. In the meantime I'll probably make another sometime using a better donor.

How did you make the mock-up decal?

Was trying to find another post I made and stumbled in here. Completely missed your question, Bob... sorry about that.
Anyway what I normally do is scan the artwork / logo / what-have-you in question, then import the full-res (i.e. "same actual size when printed") image into an editor for clean-up. I remove any artifacts and make the image as clean and "flat" (using minimal colors... sometimes convert to B&W) as possible. I then export this result to a Vector program and use the trace function to get a starting point. The traces are never perfect, but can sometimes provide a useful jump-start. Other times it's easier to draw from scratch.
I then take the trace and overlay it on top of the original scanned image... and work on editing to make it as close as possible.
Once this new vector art is complete, I scan in the "target object". In this case, the "Cannonball text" from the caboose, in its original size, was an odd fit to the loco. So I scanned the loco, took that image then scaled the Cannonball logo until it seemed to fit OK. (the "Wabash" text was a straight font, Times New Roman IIRC).
Print out on paper as a test... when satisfied, print on decal film. Yay!
Seems like a lot of steps and work but once you get proficient it's actually pretty easy. The Cannonball logo is half-traced and half-scratch, but it still only took about an hour or two.
Computers are amazing things. As much as I hate 'em, I can't live without 'em.

FWIW, I have an Alps MD1000 and a dedicated Dell PC w/XP Pro and Corel Draw 4, and room for other vector/raster programs, should the need arise here to "double up" on decal projects for members. I managed to pick up several boxes of white cartidges over the years, also.
With that said...
I've never taken the printer out of the box. I am looking for my Corel 4 CD I have a BODACIOUS learning curve to get to usable decals/repros
Perhaps in 2010 we can put our heads together and git some stuff dun. I am in a transitory mode right now, but hopefully will weigh anchor soon.
Jus' puttin' it out there. -ThOR

I think the MD-1000 needs to be tricked into doing white, since it did not have native hardware support for it, and the driver does not recognize or support white undercoating. But I've heard of people peeling the labels off standard colors and putting them on the white cartridges to get around this.
ALPS knew what they were doing with that too. The white cartridges have maybe 1/3 to 1/2 the ribbon of all the others.

Hrmph!
I do remember reading about this contraption's shortcomings on a blog/newsgroup someplace over the years. One more thing to spend countless hours learning and fidgeting.

I remember that caboose very well. That was a fun night between that one and the Western Pacific caboose.
