From the inquiry sparked by the brownbox SP boxcar listing, was netted this previously-unknown and unheard-of item:

The dealer's mention of a "Canadian Pacific" boxcar piqued my interest, but I never expected this... and I've since been told this is a true find-and-a-half. Box is diamond-dated March 1968. No idea how/when/where this car was offered but apparently it's incredibly rare - moreso even than what I thought it might be! Canadian Pacific was never a cataloged roadname for any rolling stock. Unless you count "CP Rail". which is worth mentioning anyway because that took over the 311-A slot, not 311-Z. Apparently the Alpha/Omega of Tyco Boxcars lives in Canada?

We were visiting some relatives this weekend in the far-off land of New Brunswick, and before we left I did some research and found a hobby shop in the area. Valley Hobby Shop was the name I believe.

It was a nice place, small but clean and very friendly. Fair prices too. While they didn't have a lot in the way of rolling stock, they had a lot of buildings and small details. And enough decals to start a seperate shop!
I was looking for some paint and glue, which they were lacking a supply of, but I noticed this blue beauty sitting on a shelf just out of the corner of my eye.

I'd read about Rapido's steam cars, but now I could see one for myself, and better yet, I could afford one!
Better yet, it's in the VIA scheme, which is what my new railroad shall be. More on that later. Look at this thing!

The pipework is as impressive as they make it sound, there is really nothing left to add on here.

The controls are cleverly hidden. They are mounted underneath a roof hatch, which has a magnet underneath. The cap for the smoke fluid is between the control switches, and is made of metal, so the roof hatch sticks to it. There are two switches, one for the smoke generator, and one for the exterior lights.

This is what the lights look like when they are on.

I tried to get a picture of the smoke. It does put out a fair bit of smoke, and it has a small fan inside the blow the smoke out. While the fan is a bit loud, it actually sounds somewhat "realistic".

Well, that's that. My only beef with this car is that just about any VIA passenger cars I find to match this won't be nearly as detailed. I think it may look out of place amongst the more run-of-the-mill stuff. Oh well, maybe that's just more of a challenge for me.

About my new railroad; I was simply going to put new trackwork on my old layout, but I will have to wait for a while. That's because we are moving! I'm looking forward to the move a lot, I've already told my mother I want a house with a big basement so I can run trains all through it.

Have a great week everybody.

That Via car looks pretty sweet. I saw the first pic and was like "oh that's cool"....than I saw the rest

Here's my Via observation car. The real ones had domes (park cars), but this is the closest I have.

IHC had "Magic-Mate" couplers that hooked up to Kadees and HornHooks.

This is a steam generator car. It is not a "B-Unit."
CN had the seperate steam-generator cars, where as CP did not... CP Rail had the steam generators on their diesel locomotives.

A few roads used F-B-unit shells and chassis to make their own "steam-gennies" after the steam locomotives went away.

How much did you pay for this gem, MM 1498?

And GIC, how the 7734 did you get this Canadian Pacific beaver boxcar?!
That IS one true diamond in the rough!

John

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out.
"I love your catenary!"
Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

Uhh, I think it was around the normal price for Rapido cars, about $60.
I know that's a lot for one car, but I was feeling like a real big spender at the time.
