Has anyone been to any shows lately where they found Tyco items but haven't shared it with us yet. I missed a great buy at auction, last week, but lost it because I waited too long. One of the interesting Tyco things recently is that there's a powered crane that I saw by accident in a video appears to be a powered version of one that was available for Tyco trains but was made for the US-1 Trucking sets, also a powered bulldozer like one that is air operated for the trains. I probably wont get to a train show until fall or early spring.

Thanks Microbuss, I had seen that and forgotten. I was just trying to stimulate some talk about Tyco stuff. I used to stop at as many yard sales as I had energy for but I've quit doing that. And I would pick up some bargain train stuff, Tyco, but I don't see that much anymore. Flea markets and antique malls seem to have train items once in a while.

I'm not too sure what might come of it, but I've run into a couple of ex-modelers who might be willing to part with some stuff...who knows, there could be some Tyco stuff in there.

Haven't found anything "new" in terms of "previously unknown" lately.
I did find an early 60's Tyco UP flatcar (earlier short version before the tooling was modified to Skid Flat) at a car/train/plane show over the weekend, that was pretty cool. Knew that car existed but hadn't seen one before. Also found an Autoloader that actually said "Mantua" on the flat car bottom - that was also a first for me but I didn't buy it.

Hi AF, I watched the video of the motorized crane. I have the Tyco crane for trains and found a right hand drive motor that I used to motorize the crane. The motor is DC so the speed can be controlled with a transformer. It works well. I'm planning on kit bashing a small shed to cover the motor, that will be down the road since the crane is not on the layout. Check out the picks. If I get time in the future I'll shoot a little video of it in action. I have also used the same motor to motorize the Tyco conveyor belts, Purina, Gold mine, etc. I picked up the motors at a train show in Baltimore a few years ago, have since moved to the Houston Texas area. Hello Tom,
Geez, that's a neat crane project that I would like to know more about. Can motors have always been too expensive for me to consider them for motorizing Tyco stuff but now that they are about $10.00 why not?
Lost my head and bid an evil bay auction in this week. Total, including shipping, was $18.59... My winnings...

plus a very nice LifeLike C&O box car that I've never seen! Now as long as Madame Queen doesn't find out...

That Mantua Autoloader you saw has me curious, GoingInCirclez. Was it a Tyco-Mantua or a Mantua-Mantua? And is there an easy way to tell one from the other?
You guys are so lucky getting Tyco stuff at shows. In these parts, folks are frisked at the door for anything Mantuish. Although an arrogant dude did once offer me a Durango floodlight car for AU$40! Don't know how he smuggled it in but he sure did think the light shone out his... caboose!

LOL, there are ways to tell TMs from MMs but I would hardly call it easy, even I get confused at times, especially with 50' boxcars.
Anyway. I only looked under the Autoloader to see if it was the last version marked "Yugoslavia" (with the former Tyco markings blocked out). Instead, in the center was a raised blockout that had been changed to say Mantua; didn't recall seeing that on a flat before, but I may yet have one elsewhere. Anyway the usual "Made by Tyco in Hong Kong" was there also, under one of the trucks. Suppose that makes it a TM, but I always thought the Mantua name had been downplayed completely when the 50' flatcar came out in 1968. Mantua never sold the Autoloader under their name; I don't think they used the flatcar tooling either. So much for easy answers...

ER, Is that motor and transmission the one Tyco uses on the US-1 sets? I never even considered powering a crane. Great idea!

AF, I dont know if this is the same motor used for the US-1 crane. It's hard to see in the video if the motor is top mounted or mounted under the crane.

Figured as much. It got me checking the underside of my Mantua cars though and I'm sad to report no Tyco markings of any kind. All made around 20 years too late, I'd say!

Hey Brian, I had not thought of usung them as a repower but it doesn't sound like a bad idea. I'll look at that when time permits. I'm going to the Baltimore area in October, just in time for the show that the motors came from. I'm planning on trying to find a few more.

Loopy, Does that C&O caboose have a die-cast or plastic frame? The ladders/railings/brake wheels look old enough for the metal version. Todd

I won an auction several weeks ago that included a "lot" of cars. I really only wanted one car, a Tyco SOO boxcar, and felt it was worth it as the other pieces of rolling stock were very nice as well.
Check out this post and see if you have any thoughts. http://www.tycoforums.com/tyco/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=7230

Hello Todd.
The C & O caboose is from 1958. It has a diecast frame with the hole to mount a lighting kit.
The stock numbers for the pieces I have shown are; 224E - F9A (closer to an F7) C&O single powered 1st cataloged in 1960 for $8.98 229E - F9B C&0 non powered 1st cataloged in 1960 for $3.98 327C - unlighted 8 wheel Caboose C&O 1st cataloged in 1958 for $3.95 but quickly reduced to $3.49 There were other variations of the C&O F9 units; 225E - F9A C&O non powered 1st cataloged in 1960 for $3.98 226E - F9A C&O twin powered 1st cataloged in 1960 for $13.95 230E - F9B C&O single powered 1st cataloged in 1961 for $8.98
Single powered means rear truck is powered. Twin powered means both front and rear trucks are powered. It does not mean 2 locomotives packed together as some would have you believe. Loopy

Well I haven't been to shows lately, but tonight I scored a pretty epic win. Close friend of mine called me a week ago and told me they finally came across their old HO stuff while cleaning and I could come sort through it. He had been telling me for awhile as soon as they cleaned the basement they would get it too me. He made it sound like there wasn't much there...well I came home with this tonight. Can you spot the Tyco stuff? (look near the bottom row).
It all smells like mold and needs cleaned in the worst way. But lots of good looking pieces are in there. TONS of AHM stuff, which is awesome because I didn't own any AHM stuff till now. The two AHM engines (the centennial GP18 and B&O FM C-liner) took off the second they touched the track, even after sitting for so long. The big CNW trainmaster runs smooth also. For some reason there was alot of CNW stuff. I forgot there was a great looking CNW coal hopper my friend built that I didn't put in the photo. The tyco equipment looks to be in good shape. I really like the tractor flat car. And the Reading coal hopper was a red box item, shame the box had succumb to mold I would have liked to keep it. The Heinz reefer is awesome because I live near Pittsburgh and I always wanted one of those
