I was thinking that with all the Tyco and Mantua stuff to be bought, and is being bought, why aren't there more Tyco collectors posting as part of this forum? Surely we're not the only guys keeping "Tyco Ebay" afloat.

I was thinking that Tyco collectors would be looking for a site like this on their own and I hadn't thought about getting the word out.

I think Shaygetz and GIC have links to this site on their sites and some here have links on their "utube" videos that should help. I'm glad for this site since it gives us a place to hang out Tyco style.

Gentlemen,
I have found there is one group (younger) that collects Tyco and one group (older) that collects Mantua and Tyco. When this forum was formed a vote was taken... Should Mantua be combined with Tyco? The vote was NO! Until the two are combined you will notice some of the older collector types not posting...
If you are looking for good Tyco pieces on evil bay I suggust you look under the Mantua listing. Check it out...
I also notice that both of you have been husling around trying to promote this forum... I apprciate your efforts. Thank you,
Loopy

I guess the question is... do the staff and owner of this site want more traffic?
The reason I ask is that a well executed marketing plan would do that.
As an example of one small tactic, placing links to this site in waves of new Tyco YouTube videos would likely create a small, but measurable increase in traffic- and perhaps membership- for a short time. Sustainment of visibility is another story altogether though.
I'm not sure if that is the goal- but thought I'd throw that out for discussion.
FWIW- I'm going to post several new videos of my trucks in the near future. I'd like to reference this site if its okay.

I'm not in charge but I think if you wanted to add this link to a video it would be ok. I thought of doing the same in a video that just shows some Tyco and Mantua Tyco items.

Was there a "vote" to include/exclude Mantua? If so, I don't remember it. Seems a fool's errand to try to exclude it, but either way there ain't jack happening on this forum until we get a more active Admin.
The one caveat to Mantua is the drunkards' haze that blurs the line between them and Tyco. You have to original Mantua.... which became Tyco as R-T-R, until Mantua was phased out... until Mantua was resurrected using the exact same tooling and stock items as Tyco, until they went separate ways again with a mix of classic former Tyco tooling + Lindberg veterans... it's enough to confuse newbie and veteran alike. We could use some clarification but I fear stuff with get lost in the shuffle either way.
Now, onto AlcoFan's question:
I have unfortunately found in the past couple years, that there are indeed some very knowledgeable and well-established Tyco collectors who are well aware of this site. Unfortunately, for some amalgam of stupid, childish, selfish, petty, sycophantic and/or all, none, or some of the above, they would rather not participate, nor acknowledge this site's existence. They'd rather retreat to their social-misfit's club and act like so many gollums guarding their preciouses. Those people should never be welcome here.
I'm sure my words above won't win any friends from that crowd but I have a firmly established opinion that collecting should be fun, and the more you share the more you earn.
In the last year we've had double-dealers, people to brag and name-drop and hint about rarities they are "afraid" to show, people who post wonderful pictures of vintage rarities like RCA and Star-Kist sets and then delete them because of some stupid fear (you're damn right I'm going to clone and sell those like mad! ).... say nothing of other past stupid misunderstandings... and my own infamous experiences with ebay-related BS that tracked back to the forum.
In my opinion, if a certain cachet of collectors wants to enjoy their self-anointed perches from on high and look down their nose at the rest of us, so they can just circle-trade amongst themselves all the time, then so be it. We ain't missing much. Most of these guys have already spent far too much of their lives as all talk, all money, all secret-showoff, and NO action when it comes to finally getting the story and legacy of Tyco out in the open. They're not helping anybody, least of all themselves. Guess what, they ain't getting any younger and he who dies with the most trains.... dies. And the Lionel market will crash once again, only in HO scale this time. Boo Hoo.
That said, I will say there is one other problem this forum has that will keep the die-hards away: too much general-interest stuff. Which I honestly don't have much of an issue with, personally. But this forum's alleged name, "The Tyco Collector's Forum", has really been a bad joke and a terribly gross misnomer of late. It's not a Tyco forum anymore. It hasn't been for ages. It's more of a "Anything wierd, cheap, vintage, foreign, collectible, new, or whatever as long as it's HO" forum. Which is great in its own right... but in fairness, would have no place in a dedicated "Tyco" forum. And again, the serious collectors out there have long been far too good for the plebs among us, and don't have time to dare associate with all that "crap", apparently.
Ugh. I have heartburn and too much stress from a long weekend. Not attacking anyone personally, just calling what I sees.
I wish I had an answer. But I've dealt with the serious guys and while there are some likeable souls out there, there are some real jerks too. I don't miss 'em, and don't wish 'em here. I enjoy the crowd we've got, the friends we can make, the guys who have made this place what it is... and those who take up the slack from time to time. And for the newbies who "get" that model trains are simply supposed to be for fun... and any profit may and should only ever be a tangential bonus... a most hearty welcome indeed.

Well spoke there Pal! I likes it!
The "Poncy" types can go elsewhere!
Btw guys. I'm not posting much primarily becasue a full time connection on the Internet is a luxury I can't afford and so I get on a the Library. That restricts my time tremendously and leaves little time for the TCF. That will change in the future I'm confident...
I hope youi're all well.
Best, Gareth

I can't speak for the others that don't post much, but I try to add to the talks when I have something to add, which isn't that often. Perhaps some of the others are like me, like only Tyco in HO, but have trains in other scales and don't have rare or interesting Tyco items. I have mostly O scale, but I like Tyco as its what I grew up with, so I learn what I can here and just follow along.

I am still buying a lot of red box Tyco and 60s and 70s era AHM.
I just don't bother to post my findings here much anymore.
The comments from one particular member here on this forum are inane and lack any constructive substance and I grew tired of it...so I just figured "screw it" I have been enjoying trains long before there was a internet and I can enjoy them still without having to share them on this forum.(or any other for that matter)
The only way to address this problem is with a more active administrator as GIC stated in his post.
I also agree whole heartily with GIC on the subject of posting some rare and unusual items then "stripping" the pictures off a day or two later...WTF purpose does that serve ????
With the exception of some "dead" ebay links every posting that I put up with a picture or pictures is "alive and well" and that dates back to when I joined the forum on August 08 2007.My pictures will remain as long as my photobucket account does not crash.
I can only hope that this forum someday returns to some semblance of it s former self.

Hmmm, well IF I get to First Frost this year I will certainly be talking to Todd (NYC) about the forum. See what can be done about adminning...
I'm grateful for what we have. None of us is promised or guaranteed anything.

Hello all! Sorry, I have to confess to being a slacker of late. I have not taken/had the time to hang out here like I used to. Been busy with ants, mantids, and giant millipedes all summer. Not to mention kids and the ever present "honey-do" list.
Personally, I like the "generalist" nature of the forum. I am NOT a Tyco collector. I use the GP20 and C630 shells for kitbashing, but otherwise have no real use for Tyco products. But I do have an interest in AHM, IHC, Athearn, Model Power and such! I like this site for the people more then the trains. My kitbashes would get no where without the advice of Ray and the prompting of Alco Fan. Not to mention those who have provided "fodder" for my projects.
While any site can use some improving, I have to ask, "how will having a more active admin help here?" True, I don't see as much of NYC as in the past, but the site seems relatively well behaved. Several of my insect-related forums have "behavioural" issues that I am happy don't exist here. Is it an admin issue or that the mods don't have the power/ability to deal with day-to-day issues?

Ditto, what AF and Romcat and Hypo say...
It is the total package this forum provides, not just the Tyco/Mantua portion. If it runs on tracks I collect it...

I agree with Hypoponera. I'm not a huge Tyco fan myself, so I find the more laissez-faire attitude around here much more welcoming. I think Tyco collecting is a far-too narrow slice of the hobby to support an entire forum, especially since the hardcore collectors prefer to take their toys and go home, as GIC pointed out.
The general state of affairs here is probably just the nature of the beast, and the current lack of activity part of a summertime lull. It is a Tyco forum after all, not neuroscience. At least we don't have the flame wars so common to other forums that really would demand a moderator's iron grip.

I scanned over this thread pretty quick but get the jist of it. How do we expand the membership here. There are good ideas here and I'll support any of them. This of course will require much more attention to the site than I've been giving it. I'm ready to do that.
The vast majority here know I lost my son last year when he was only 8 years old. To put it mildly it really messed up my life for a while. I hope nobody here will ever experience a loss like that. That being said and out of the way, I'm doing much better now and ready to get on with life again.
A suggestion I have is for those of us that sell Tyco or Mantua items on eBay is to include a link in the auction leading to this site. It's surely targeting the right audience.

| Welcome back NYC!! I missed your posts but understand but cannot fathom to the full extent of your suffering the kind of loss you did -- Time will keep healing you -- I too haven't been as active in a few months due to the current economic situation that has taken a severe toll on my income which has affected everything else. I am so far behind- i can see the caboose - L-O-L. I am working on some new Tyco videos to get on forum via youtube--stay tuned!

NYC glad to see your back on board! But you were away for reasons NONE of us wanted to hear happening to you. I can't even fathom what you must have went though. But if us posting pictures of little colorful toy trains built several years ago helps heal old wounds, we can do that

Nice to see you back Todd! I truly hope things are on the mend for you, and as others have said, may time be the salve that soothes the scars of life. My offer is always standing, if you need help just holla.
To that end, despite my frustrated barbs toward the "admin" elsewhere on this forum, I should point out in fairness that I had your back more than once when questions were poised. So it's nothing personal... I'm sure you're well aware how technology needs a good de-cobwebbing from time to time. Anyway, thanks for finally demoting me as I requested - it's not my problem anymore. But I am willing to help out elsewhere if/when you need it.
Thanks again for setting this place up, and have a welcome-back brew on me.
But if I see that boxcar you just won from me getting boku bucks at some future date... I'm'a gonna come calling for what's mine, LOL
