I was just thumbing through that, Mike. It's a great book, especially for someone like me who grew up in the 80's-90's and missed a lot of things. It's quite a bit different than the literature I grew up with, and much more interesting.
Speaking of such, I have another question for anyone who knows: Were sprung trucks more common years ago? I've got things that I thought I recognized, like Athearn kits, but they have sprung trucks. Did kits come with them, or were they add-ons? Any insight would be appreciated.

In the early daze, many kits came with them sprung...Varney, Athearn, MDC to name a few. The logic at the time was that it helped the cars track better, though that debate was never really settled.
The HO Primer was the book that really got me going back in '74, that and Bill McClanahan's "Scenery for Model Railroads".

Thanks for the info, Shaygetz. The HO primer has led me to another question: It shows a Lionel AC transformer being used with a Lionel rectifier to run HO trains. Do things like this still exist? Has anyone used them? There's something vaguely exciting about the idea of running my HO trains with my Postwar ZW.
Steve--that site is excellent. The guy that created it used to post on here.

Exciting, eh? ...like watching your loco go up in a pretty puff of blue smoke...
I'm sure you could find one on eBay or at a swap meet.

Two things: first of all, the HO primer is awesome. I wish everyone on this board had the chance to read it. It really gives insight into the "heyday" of HO. I grew up with the pre-packaged, plastic, ready to run Life-Like/Bachmann stuff, with the Athearn blue boxes being the most serious items around. All of that was simply put it together, plug it in, and run it--no skill involved. The primer really shows the skill that went into modeling, building, and wiring before that. It's sure a lot different than the Life-Like "Basics for Beginners" that was my bible in my early days.
Second, Microbuss: I did a little test on the gondola/containers issue. They fit in all my Life-Like, Roco, and Bachmann gondolas. They did not fit in Mantua or Tyco gondolas. Basically, look inside for the small diagonal support ribs. It it has three or none, they should fit.
Next weekend is busy...a birthday, school stuff, and a small train show. But even with that, I'll still have my eyes on the garage sales.

I'd say you should be happy! YOu got a nice Cox set, an MDC Boxcab, and lots of other neat trains. Hope it was a good price, too! Definitely a good score.

Last week was one of the best garage sale outings I've ever had. I got a trunk full of stuff--antiques and junk of all types. I got a Model Power set with a Chessie Plymouth switcher, some cars, track, and transformer. Today wasn't nearly as good, but for 50 cents I scored this nice hat:

There was a woman selling this and a few other unmarked ones. I hope her husband doesn't go looking for this come Monday morning!

I've noticed that the prices seem to be up this year. I think the American Pickers/Pawn Stars/Storage Auction shows have inspired some amateur antique dealers.
I never posted all this. I got it a few weeks ago. It also had an oval of track and the normal small Model Power power pack. Paid $10, probably a good price, but I didn't exactly feel great about it. Had to buy it though because it's a Chessie.

I'll probably let my daughter play with it. I don't really care for the bright colors of it all.

Hi burlington77,
Nice catch! The screw sticking out of the bottom of your Chessie engine needs to be tightend up, otherwise the body will drag along the tracks. My Wife picked these up for me at a garage sale. $2 for the train set and that included a bunch of track a bridge and a Tyco and Model Power transformer. I'm not sure what she paid for the cars and trucks. I love restoring and or customising these things.
Thanks for looking and sharing.

Well, today was the second dismal garage sale week in a row. I'm still waiting for a "big score" like the ones I found last year.
The small city I go to usually has 120+ sales every Friday, with the number a little lower on Saturday. The last couple weeks it was under 70 each day. The only "neat" thing I found today was an old rotary dial phone for a buck that I rewired and it works. Old things were built to last.

Burlington77!! How in the H*LL are you able to go to ~120+ garage sales in one day? I am lucky if I hit one a year. How do you find the time... You got 8 rain deer and a sleigh?
I used to like to go to garage sales, house / estate auctions and flea markets all the time when I was in my late teens. I am 40 now, with two small kids and a wife that HATES "other peoples junk" and refuses to ever buy anything "old" or used. I on the other hand, especially like the old and don't mind the used, if it works or is fixable.
I went to an estate auction a couple months ago...spent ~3-4 hours including travel to and from, threw a few bids in on some nice (and not so nice) vintage HO stuff and did not get a single scrap. The prices went so high, I could not believe it. They went higher than what they would have sold for on eBay, even if correctly listed. Blew my mind!
My father-in-law goes to garage sales often though. Once he found one collection, but again the guy wanted so much for each piece, it was not worth even trying for. My best finds came from posting wanted ads on Craig's-list. I have had no luck though, trying to pursue items that were actually listed there though.
I would love to run into those big scores too... I think the best I ever had was one purchased sorta through eBay. I purchased a lot of ~100 cal-scale / Kemtron brass detail packets for ~$100 form a seller who emailed me immediately after I paid. He said: "I have thousands more and no time to list them, please make me an offer. if you are interested." He was right...thousands... I sent him $2,300 which is as I explained to him, "a low-ball offer, but is all I could come up with within two weeks". He took my offer. I sold off just the brass trucks from that lot and more than quadrupled my return. I have pretty much kept all the rest of the lost wax brass detail parts for my own use. That was a score that I not seen the like of since. My very first score, however, was listed on ebay as "31 Black Train Pieces". The listing had 2-3 really dark and bad pictures. I could tell though there were at least 2 articulated locos in the lot. In fact, there was a Bowser Challenger and a custom scratchbuilt/kitbash Mantua 2-6-6-2 logging locomotive with an all brass boiler featuring an opening smokebox. I paid ~$330 for 17 steam engines and 14 tenders. Six of the engines and eight tenders were all brass. Every engine was highly super detailed with weathering, lanterns, jewels, fiber optic lighting, brass castings, etc. I sold only 3 of the engines and have kept the rest. Below are a sample of the engines in this lot:

This caboose came from the same seller, but was in a lot of "28 Red Train Pieces":

That was about ~6 years ago now and there has only been one or two major scores like that since... But I really paid for the them. One did produce this however:

It is an HO scale Brass Kosmos Timber Company's #11 standard gauge 2-6-6-2. # 37 of only 208 units made. I got it like this:

I sent it to a brass collector friend of mine in VA who restored it on trade for another locomotive.
I just wanted to say, I really appreciate you guys being here on this forum and forums like this. It gives me the chance to share these great finds. I live with my wife, two daughters..my Mothr-in-law moved in last fall None of the females in the house care to hear anything about my trains and none of my friends my age ...or even older in fact, collect trains. Our dog is female as well. She is my buddy though and never leaves my side.

I don't actually go to all of them, that's just how many I have to choose from. People are pretty good about listing trains in their newspaper ad when they have them.
By the way, I'm lucky in that this is a family thing. My wife loves old things, my older kid loves anything, and the baby doesn't complain too much. The pace is much slower with kids, though. My wife and I used to cover more sales when we were alone, but I can't complain.

You're right Ken...although as can clearly be seen in some of my pictures, I do both quality and quantity.
It is the quantity part that my wife keeps complaining about.

I definitely lean towards quantity rather than quality, but unfortunately there's not much quality available around here. In fact, I've never seen locomotives like that other than on the internet, not even at the local train shows. I don't think I've ever seen anything brass like that, but big steam engines in general seem hard to come by. Like I've said before, I think it's a regional thing.

Sean, I think you should open a vintage HO warehouse so the rest of us schlubs could come a pickin'. Too bad a business like that wouldn't pay all the bills.
Is that a Mantua Mikado with elephant ears? That's a really interesting look, although I'm lukewarm about the twist tie on the headlight.
And that logger is gorgeous, but for some reason your before shot isn't displaying.

Burlington77, Unless regional includes the internet, I would have to agree. It is pretty much the only way I buy. There are few shows and no hobby shops anywhere near me. I buy almost exclusively on-line.

Funny thing happened this week... I saw this posting on eBay and i had to bid:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200625967523&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
The Signal Hill and Crossfield cars struck my eye. You see. The lot I spoke of earlier of the 31 Black Train Pieces and the 28 Red Train Pieces and the ## Brown Train pieces... etc... This was 5-6 years ago and I had purchased nearly 1/3 of the entire collection that had been listed in dozens of small lots of a hand full of pieces. Well they were all detailed and were decaled for a make believe line called... Signal Hill...
So I had to buy these two cars when I saw them. I was not sure, but now that they have made it here, I am convinced it was once part of the collection I purchased several years ago... The yellow car shown below has all the same level of details and even has nudie pictures hanging on the walls, just like the nudie pictures hanging on the walls of the red (Signal Hill) caboose I showed earlier...also shown below. That was just too cool!. As soon as i saw it, I called the seller and asked him if he has any more..

Actually, I couldn't believe the price. I was ready to offer more. So no complaints at all.
I took it apart this evening, oiled the bearings and put a touch of grease on the gears, and it sprang to life. Very nice. I also realized after a closer inspection that this particular model is made for a "cog" railway. It has a large gear on one of the axles designed to engage a rack so that it can climb steep grades. Very cool.
Hmm, do I need a 12% grade somewhere on the layout?

Yes, the internet is a whole other thing. Sadly, the internet has become the main way I purchase many things...trains, DVDs, records and CDs, you name it. It seems like the stores don't have anything worthwhile anymore.

I would actually place it just a smidge above stealing it... My bid was over 3x what it sold for because I knew the quality of the workmanship, having already owned several pieces of this collection.
It just makes me sick knowing I missed out on the "## Brown Train Pieces" lot...which were ALL passenger cars. I still remember looking into the windows of the cars (in the bad photos) and being able to see some fine details poking through. It was not until the "Red Train Pieces" came to my door and I saw the 8 caboose cars with fully detailed interiors that I realized that the Brown lot my computer decided to freeze on must have been a real gem.

Thanks Ken!
I sometimes fear people might think I am showing off when i post some of my stuff, and sometimes they might be right, but above all else, i really like the pieces and some of them are so special, I really think they deserve to be shared.
Take this piece for instance:
Ebay listing I have of it (for information seeking only)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370344789179&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT
/tyco/forum/uploaded/Mustangs_n_Trains/20110713124902_Scratchbuilt_O_WM_Challenger.jpg
I have had it listed on eBay for almost 2 solid years now strictly for the purposes of finding out who made it. I think I have nailed down (or at least got in a fishing line - not yet pulled in) the builder's name. It is too special a piece to leave sit on a shelf and not share with everyone. So far, the listing has been viewed over 10,500 times.
