Actually, those cheap Hallmark giveaways are done with old molds that adapt quite well to current equipment...these I did last summer just for chuckles...

I have a modeler friend who's actually powered the locomotive from that set, they were offered by Reader's Digest and made by High Speed Metal. Unknowing modelers are easily suckered by them, got a thrift shop down the street trying to sell them for $5 a pop.

I've picked up several of those High Speed cars and locos. They look nice enough, but if they only had real couplers and wheels! I modified one of the locos to make a dummy for my daughter to push around on some track. I think the most I ever paid was 25 cents, but I've seen the loco go for 12 bucks on ebay. Ridiculous.
Well, garage sales were awful this week, but here's a pic of something I picked up last week and forgot to post. This Marx O locomotive is missing some parts, but it runs and I got it for a dollar:

Another massive find! This two box lot was marked $50, but in conversation with the seller I said I'd love to buy it but I only had $23. She must have really wanted to sell, because she quickly offered to take it. It's all rough and VERY dusty, but still a deal for the price. All three locos run after a quick wheel-scraping.
Here it is as found:

Trying to sort it out. Lots of Tycokits.

Locos and rolling stock:

Got my first KFC! Too bad there's no sign. The Howard Johnson is real nice. There's also a bunch of track, Life-Like trees, a Bachmann transformer, and an old MRC Twinpower that didn't make the pictures. I'm going to have to add another section to my layout to use all this.
Edit: I found the KFC sign! But no bucket. Anybody have ideas on making a replacement bucket? A cork? I know the decals are posted on here somewhere, so I think I can really do something with this.

Well, for my last Friday morning before going back to work, I didn't do so well. Lots of driving around, lots of overpriced junk. Only thing I bought were a couple records and CD's. The only train I even saw was one of those GeoTrax sets.
On the up side, the big flea market is just 3 weeks away!

Hello All, Today I picked up a Tyco,Illinois Central 40' boxcar, and Life Like Napierville Junction covered hopper, and a LL Pennsylvania Bicentennial gondola. The IC boxcar is boxed, the two others are unboxed. All for a grand total of 9 bucks, not a bad deal, plus I found 4 new records to spin on the ole turntable today.

Sounds like a good day, choochin3. For some reason, I love those LL covered hoppers. It was one of my first HO cars and it was Burlington, which was my favorite for a long time. The Napierville one is pretty sharp. The Chessie and Rio Grande ones look like they were colored with a highlighter.
School has started, so I'm probably not going to get in as much garage sale time. Around here, the best stuff goes on Friday and Saturday is usually the leftovers, but you never know.

So after reading about everyone's Garage Sale finds, I finally found some trains at a garage sale. Totally by accident. The Garage sale I thought I was going to was not today but, is tomorrow. Did not make correct note of date. So, anyway on the way there I noticed another garage sale. There was a lot of electronics and Games. So as I was walking around I spotted some trains. Not HO but, an Lionel 1970's 027 train set. The price was very Cheap and the set looked in good condition. So I could not pass it up. Missing Logs and 2 Canisters. Otherwise complete.. So here it is... Carl

Can't believe I missed this post.
Burlington77 - That pic you made, of the bunch of rolling stock and a silver HotWheels - that's an '81 Dodge Omni 024, rather desirable casting to '80s Mopar freaks like myself. I have the hard to find Dodge Rampage with Goodyear rubber tires and the '81 Dodge Aries K-Car wagon.
Microbusss - Nice F7 A-B find! About a month ago I would have had a spare truck for you from a junk GP9 dummy; sold all that old stuff, though. However, that's an easy find on Ebay. The powered loco has Athearn's old "Hi-F" rubber band drive - if the bands are all dried out, hit a WalMart for elastics for a set of dental braces. One bag will last the life of your loco. That A-B set dates to about the mid-60's due to the later shell with cast-on number boards, but rubberband drive and matching frame/trucks on the B unit.
VintageHO - Nice Lionel set; I'm jealous, very much so!
In my own news, I recently inherited a Marx O34 scale train set from my grandmother. It's an heirloom and belonged to my uncle who died in 1965. Not very valuable, but very sentimental.

Flea market day one wasn't bad:

I was hesitant on the 4-8-4 because I don't usually have good luck with Bachmann, but I talked the seller down to $20 from 30, so I went for it. It's never been out of the box (until today) and runs and smokes great! Best smoker I own, easily. I bought the SF Athearn A-B set from the same guy for $10. It runs, but the front gears squeal. I'm sure I'll figure it out. The box of model motoring track was interesting....I bought it mainly for the Marx train transformer that was in with it. Did someone seriously run T-Jets with that thing?
I saw some other things that I may go back tomorrow and try to get a deal on.

Nice haul...those Northerns are great looking but easily---and I mean easily---given to cracked axles, a curse built into most Bachmann locos of the day.

That's what I was afraid of. I guess I'll see how long it lasts. Aside from one modern diesel switcher, I don't own any Bachmanns that actually run well.

Here's all I got from the second day of flea market. The stuff I had my eye on was gone, but I got some deals:

The boxcar and caboose were 25 cents, I think they're from some kind of Ertl set. The Lionel Bridge is a 315 with the light missing, which from what I read this morning are pretty hard to find? I don't know...I just got it and the milk platform cheap from a guy who really...in his words..."needed to get rid of his junk before he got fined." Must be a hoarder.
The box of track is a mystery as of yet. I thought it was S scale, but It's not. It's some kind of two-rail O. It's incredibly cheap and flimsy, and made by Hafner. I'm going to do some internet research on it. I got the whole box as part of a 3 for $1 deal on a table of junk.
EDIT: Did the research. Hafner made wind-up trains in the 40's. Learn something every day. Maybe I'll set it up and run my Marx wind-up on it.

Steve: I believe your first loco is one of these:
http://www.ho-scaletrains.net/tycobrownboxdiesels/id16.html
I thought garage sale season was over, then I stumbled upon this:
/tyco/forum/uploaded/burlington77/20100925152756_septgaragesale1.jpg
/tyco/forum/uploaded/burlington77/20100925152837_septgaragesale2.jpg
/tyco/forum/uploaded/burlington77/20100925152922_septgaragesale3.jpg
/tyco/forum/uploaded/burlington77/20100925153007_septgaragesale4.jpg
/tyco/forum/uploaded/burlington77/20100925153029_septgaragesale5.jpg
I thought the bunk car and the gondola with containers were interesting. There's a like new Chattanooga diesel/caboose, and a like new MU-2 powered UP diesel. The B&O F7 is an old Athearn, and seems like it will run when lubed. I'm getting ready to look up instructions to take it apart. The steam engine is a Rivarossi with no tender, but should be a fixer-upper. Several unused Life Like remote switches. It looks like two generations worth of collecting: older used items like Varney, Revell, and old Athearn, and nearly new Tycos. Pretty fun stuff. $50 was a lot to drop at a garage sale this morning, but that works out to about a buck a piece just counting the cars and locos.
