I have two sets - both include a Grey tractor with a blue seat. Also the red and yellow. The colors on mine are slightly darker. Could be the camera - or - these could have faded some.
Good find.

Nice score! Yeah, I thought there was always a green crawler, cant' say I've seen a gray one that I remember. Looks like some "gude stuf " you got there.
I was going to go out yard saleing this morning, but the wife got on me to clean up the basement enough to get to the washer/dryer again ( I'd been organizing, and had stuff all over the pathways ), so I didn't make it out. Oh well. I'm busy finding stuff in the back of my Chevy van now, been a few years since I've been thru it totally, and time to throw away empty crushed boxes, and other useless stuff I thought might be useful, but now it is not anymore. Finding stuff I've been looking for, like my boots, tools, etc. Always good to go thru stuff occasionally. :)

Wow, MB, I'm jealous of that find. My day wasn't nearly as good today. It was hot, sticky, and the sales weren't good. Just so I didn't go home empty handed, I bought this "toy train" for $3.

I also gave a couple bucks for this junk, which at least has some EZ track to play with:

So I know nothing about the New Bright set...is it actually G scale/gauge? I just assumed it was total junk when I bought it, but it's really kinda cool. Neat sounds and runs fine, if a little too fast.

That New Bright set is a higher quality set than most of what they made. Very few of theirs use power through the tracks as they are mostly battery powered. I love how they split the train in the box photo to make it look larger. Those tracks alone are worth the $3 you spent. A nice train set for sure, only problem is it takes a lot of room just to store those large trains.

It's turned out to be fun to run, but I don't have any space to leave it set up. I'll probably put it on a shelf and store the track.
I just think it's cool that I now have N, HO, O/O27, G, and (as soon as I get some track) S scale all running. I'll have to look for Z next.

Okay, I feel like I'm just bragging now. Flame away if you like. But anyway, the garage sales didn't turn up any trains but I got a tip on an auction. Here's what I got:
This first pic shows a toolbox full of Great Northern passenger cars. The box itself is pretty awesome. A few odds and ends in the tray.

An odd wooden box with some cheap rolling stock and lots of little parts:

This Burlington switcher set is what I wanted most from the lot. You can just barely see the Mantua Pacific and the little 0-4-0 engine at the top. They'll show up later in LOTW.

Some more rolling stock and an interesting switcher. It's been customized, some good some bad, but it runs and I can fix it up. Notice the Silver Streak box--it's a wood kit for a Katy caboose. The Athearn boxes have two cars I've wanted for a while: flatcars with a plane and boats.

My only N scale purchase. $2.50 for this lot;

This sale was interesting. Some Lionel, some HO, and a TON of N scale. The N scale stuff went cheap too--5-10 bucks for stacks of locos and rolling stock. A tub of Kato unitrack went for 10, and then stacks of it new in the box went for the same. Not too many bidders either, because most everybody left after the guns and fishing gear were sold. I would have bought more but I'm trying to cut back after all I've bought lately.

Wow, you really scored well! Bravo! Auctions can be fickle, depending on the crowd. Sometimes train stuff goes high, other times people won't even look at it. I hear ya on the guns and fishing gear, seen THAT happen at many auctions, people go nuts and pay more than they would have new for the same stuff! But glad you did well. Is this a recurring auction? Any leftover train stuff will reappear?

Tho not a garage sale,I did attend the Timonium Scale Show yesterday and found a few deals. 2 Ahm MDT 4 wheel switchers,Penn Central, and B&O.$15.00 for both. AHM 0-6-0 tank engine,Peabody Short Line.$10.00 2 MDC ore cars, Penn Central,Pennsylvania.$6.00 for both. Fleischmann 8 wheel Swiss passenger coack that matches my HAG railcar.$10.00. and 2 Bachmann Amtrak Amfleet coaches.$6.00 for both. and 2 N scale cars. I didn't have much time to browse as my 3 year old son was having a meltdown soon after we arrived. Sad to say he will not be attending anymore shows until he learns to behave himself.

Not a bad day here. We got some cheap baby stuff. (Did I mention we have a baby due on Thanksgiving?) I scored this Marx wind up plastic train for $2.50, too bad there's no key.

I also got a pocket knife and the scanner in the photo. Now I have to learn how to use a scanner.

Here are today's finds:

The GG1 is spotless and runs like new, but it wasn't exactly a bargain. Weirdest estate sale I've ever seen: they made everyone line up behind a ribbon that was to be cut at the start of the sale. Then they had to gather their family together for a lengthy...and I mean lengthy...family prayer. Then they proceeded to explain that they were having a sale (as if we didn't know why we were standing there) and then went on to tell how they needed to sell everything so they could fund their missionary trip to South America. After all that, we get in and the prices are high. Despite that, I couldn't pass it up.
I've got my eye on another lot from another garage sale that was priced too high today. I might be able to talk them down tomorrow.

Pay over $50 for it? Those AHM GG1's are supposedly good if they were made by Rivarossi, I think the Mehano version AHM GG1 wasn't so good, i fI remember what a guy told me about them. They seem to run about $50-100 at shows and on Ebay. I'm still trying to get an old Penn Line GG1, but those sell high(er).

Jerry,
I think the trucks on the Rivarossi units look better, but the IHC/Mehano units definitely run better. The Premiere series have dual can motors and flywheels, while the old RR units only have one powered truck. I put two power trucks in mine.
I thought the Penn Lines were cool too, until I found out they're shorter than scale length. The one I had also had a bowed shell from mild zinc rot, and the headlight assemblies had fallen apart.

I recently picked up a Playskool Express battery powered train for my toddler son at a garage sale for just $2. The Engine needed a little TLC to get it running smoothly. It has seen a lot of miles but is in good shape and runs well. My kid loves it and it is a great size for him. He was with me an so excited to be bringing home a train. He can put the cars on himself. I don't have any photos right now but here is a youtube video showing the same set. The one I found is exactly like this. Lots of fun.

$35-40 is doing pretty good for those, especially the old Rivarossis. Is it one of the ones they sold already wired for overhead ops?

How do you tell exactly? I've never had one of these before.
microbusss--I didn't time the prayer, but it was long enough to get the waiting crowd to utter a few curses in the 90 degree heat. I don't want to bash anyone's beliefs, but this seemed a little extreme for an estate sale. The lady in front of me started telling me about her brother who lived next door to the folks, but had to move because they kept "watching him." It was just a strange experience.

When you pop the shell, there will be a wire running from the motor to both pantographs...looks like yours should be that old, a pancake motor on one truck should be waiting for you underneath.

That's still a good price, from what I've seen of them on Ebay. I don't think you got burned, and I doubt you'd find it anywhere cheaper except from someone who totally has no clue what it's worth. Ok, I got the Riva and Mehano values backwards, thanks to the other poster, I knew one wasn't as good as the other. I'd still like to have one, no matter the maker, just to run around...well, I DO, the Tyco Amtrak version, but it doesn't have the middle wheels and is way shorter than prototype. I'll get it going anyway. :) Enjoy yours! Good buy.

Checked the GG1 and yes, it is wired for overhead use.
I struck out on return to the garage sale. They had already sold the stuff from yesterday. They got $75 for the lot. It was probably worth it, but it just didn't have enough of the stuff I like to make me drop that much money. It's not like I need any more track or power packs, and I don't have room for many structures either. Plus, it was almost all Tyco, which I love but I love to get it cheap. Wish they would have been selling pieces instead of a whole lot.

If it is wired for pantographs the AHM/RR will have a bright metal strip on the inside of one end of the shell that contacts with a copper contact when the shell is on. You might have to cut a wire to get it to run off of the pantographs.
Note the IHC enignes have a switch on the under side of the shell that switches off the contacts for the track, so it can run off of the cantenary wire. It took me a feww minutes to figure that out when I had an IHC GG-1 that didn't work.
$30 with the box is a good price for that. Remember those haven't been made in 40 years and no one is making them now.

Thirty dollars is definitely a good price for a RR GG1. I paid $35 at a train show at least 10 years ago, and that was with some rust on the pantographs.
Yours is definitely due for a complete lube job. There are provisions for a pantograph switch in the bottom of the frame, but I don't know if any of their GG1's had them. The switch parts aren't shown on any of the diagrams.

I checked it a little closer, and like NickelPlate said there's a spot on the bottom of the frame where it looks like you could add a switch for the pantographs. There are even little icons on each side of the opening, one of a rail and one of the pantograph. There is also a metal strip inside that contacts a copper wire on the top of the shell, just like AF kid said.
I'm totally in love with it. The only bad thing is that I'm afraid to touch it, much less run it. I think it's going to have a special place on a shelf for a while. I don't think it's been run much, if at all. The wheels are absolutely spotless, and everything has that "new" feel to it. I only ran it a couple laps to make sure it worked.

GG-1 love is totally understandable. And though such a fine example of electric motive power would look great on a shelf, I'm sure it would look even better effortlessly flinging a few Rivarossi PRR heavyweights around any layout.
I wonder why there was never a GG-2?
