Not at a garage sale but, at a local train show I found an original release TYCO C630 with the prototype correct trucks and Rivarossi drive. ICG paint scheme, decent condiition. Someone added a snow plow to the front.
$45.00. I did not buy it. Although, for years I have been telling myself that if I ever saw one I"d buy it. Just didn't have the cash.

That would be...Rivarossi...

I knew they made the mechanisms for many N scale locos in the 70s, I didn't know they made N scale cars, especially passenger ones...great find.

Not a garage sale, but at a train show, again. I bought a ..... Wait, I can't tell you because I'm going to use it in the kitbashing contest but, it was only $4.00.
A railpower frame with adjustable bolster spacing $1.00
A Heljan two story farm house still sealed in the box $3.oo
An Athearn switcher motor with flywheels/worms, with very little use $5.oo
A 1/87 scale Pontiac GTO, still in the box $2.00. (birthday present for my brother)
By the way the car model looks to be accurate in scale and detail.

Didn't buy it but I should have: AHM/Riva. Y6b 2-6-6-2, complete with tender, no damage and runs....$30.00

No garage sales lately, but there's an auction coming up Friday that looks good. The flyer shows a whole table of HO trains. I can't go, but someone is going for me. With any luck, I'll be posting a big haul Friday night!

Ooops, the Y6b is a 2-8-8-2.

Where is the auction?

Oh, wait a minute, the engine I bought at the train show is an Athearn, can't use it in the Forum Kitbash. This is a GP38-2 , non-dynamic brakes. Just what I need to model the Durham&Southern , an extinct local shortline.
It's a dummy unit, got it for $4.00

Here's the result of the auction:

There's more...track, buildings, road signs, etc. but that's the best of it. My favorites are the steamer and the switcher. They're Fleischmanns, which I know nothing about other than they're all metal and heavy. I got them running in minutes. The steamer looks rough but runs great. The loose BN sharknose and the UP both run good. The rest will need some work.

So I'm happy. Apparently there was more but the bidding went high. The steam engine looks better after cleaning, and I'll probably put it up for LOTW this week.

So I spent some more time working on the locos. The Fleischmanns are coming along nicely, especially the steamer. It's the first steam engine I actually like...my others are junk.

The Tycos are going to take more work. They're PowerTorques, there's not as much to do. I may try one of those really ambitious repower methods I've seen on here. I know I can come up with some CD-ROM motors easily.

The sharknose is especially frustrating. The loose one that I had to put back together runs great. The one in the box, that looks brand new, is completely dead. I'm not even sure where to start with it.

The Bachmann UP is actually interesting to me. I"ve got one already, but this one seems better. They're both the same loco with the same #866, but this one is detailed a little better and just "feels" better. It runs great too. I guess the quality changed over the years.

The European tanker-thing is another favorite. I don't really know what it is yet, but it's weird.

Train show today. I don't know what things go for everywhere else, but I feel like I got some deals:

Bachmann dd40x, like new in the box $15

Athearn mo-pac...i think it's a gp7, runs like new (after I cleaned it), needs rails, $3

From the $5 box: Athearn PRR PA-1 powered, PB and PA dummies, AHM C-Liners in L&N and SF, AHM BN Alco...something, all good runners.

And a few pieces of rolling stock, including a Tyco Hooker tanker and an older tyco Burlington boxcar, a Revell pickle car, and others.

It was a fun day!

Missed out on a Hershey's billboard reefer & and a Oscar Mayer reefer yesterday. The Hershey's looked good till I flipped it over and it looked like it fell against a sodering iron on the one section. The Oscar Mayer right next to it was missing its steps. And soon as I turned around I ran into 2 more at another table haha. But they were so faded & beat they weren't really worth it either.

But I picked up some detail parts for my kitbash entry. And the Model Power Shark I posted in the LoTW thread is a good runner so its wasn't a bad day overall. Found out the Greenburg show is coming back in January so that will probably be the next show for me.

I love this topic, but I hardly ever find trains at garage sales. I've been an avid garage saler for years, and I've found slot cars, star wars toys, g.i.joe's, transformers, a ton of records, and many other things, but the only trains I ever saw was a box of junk parts and a 200+ dollar lionel locomotive that I don't think the owner really wanted to sell.

On the other hand, there's a huge flea market coming up in about 3 weeks and I usually find something there.

Yes, I don't believe I've ever found any trains at garage sales ( maybe because I'm not a 7 AM'er, more a nooner?), but I do love the slot car sets, I bought one from my neighbor about 6 years ago, he wanted $15 for the whole thing, AND had extra cars, about 15 of them , IN the original Aurora cases. I WAS up for that one early, because he mentioned he was going to have one, and I knew he had "old stuff". My good fortune, I'll bet I have $300 worth of cars alone, never mind the set. Guess to find trains you have to get up early, too. :/

This weekend was the big flea market near here. I scored pretty good:

$25 for a box of 18 pieces of rolling stock, ranging from Tyco to Athearn. (GI Joe, Rocky, Mt., Goldent Eagle cabooses, Livestock cars, reefers, boxcars, etc.)

$7 for a MIB LL Santa Fe GP38 w/ caboose

$1.25 each for 3 Tyco Spirit of 76 cars, two passenger cars, and a piggyback flatcar, all in box.

$5 for a loco and some cars, loco unknown so far--see LOTW.

and...one of my favorite finds....an unopened strip of 8 Tootsietoy cars from 1981, only $7.

Rather than post them all at once, I'll trickle them out in the COTW thread over the coming weeks.

Nice finds. That certainly is a Marx crossing signal. I've got one operating on my small O gauge layout. It originally came with clips to stick on the track for power, but you can make them yourself from thin copper.

Check it out here: http://www.thortrains.net/maracc5.html

The other alternative is to get a Lionel insulated track and connect it to that with a lockon. Either way, when the train is on that piece of track, the arm goes down. Pretty neat little accessory, and one of the few things from my dad's old stuff that still works, after some maintenance.

Those are some sweet items you got there! What time period did the US1 sets get produced? They look neat! The Great Northern trailer in your box of trains is nice too.

I hit the jackpot today, but it was not cheap. I spent way more than I ever have at a garage sale, but I'm pretty happy with what I got:

As you can see, there's a lot of stuff. The locos run well, especially the Athearns. The more interesting items are the Varney metal loco, the Wooden reefer with the old style couplers, and the American Flyer S scale loco with 4 cars...but no track.

I hit the jackpot today, but it was not cheap. I spent way more than I ever have at a garage sale, but I'm pretty happy with what I got:

Cool beans! You've gotten way more trains at one time than I've ever seen at a yard sale. Good haul!

The more interesting items are the Varney metal loco,...., and the American Flyer S scale loco with 4 cars...but no track.

My junkbox buddy helped me with most parts for my Varney engine, and I just won an auction for 3 Varney parts loco's, so I should be able to get mine running shortly.

They're reproducing S scale track now, so it won't be hard to get, if you want to get it rolling. I THINK it uses DC voltage, not AC like Lionel.

Looks like a winna to me! SCORE!

That's quite a haul, B77. The AF diesel is an F9 (or so they say ) from the early 60's, as Gilbert was in decline. They are have A.C. motors with reverse units, though technically those motors will work on D.C. as well. I found one on eBay being sold be an informed Flyer dealer, and look at the starting bid: http://tinyurl.com/2c4wpj6

I think you did pretty well.

Okay...you guys heard that. If I go missing soon, send the police after microbuss.

Myrtle's needs a lot of cleaning and is missing one of the roof vents.

The American flyer is in even better shape than the one on ebay. It's got the original sticker and everything. There are even more bits and pieces I didn't picture. There was an entire box of MicroMachines cars and trucks that I guess they were using on the layout, as well as helicopters on fishing lines that must have hung overhead. There's also several streetlights, but they're huge and out of scale.

And, even weirder, in the box of track I found a small rifle scope and a Ginsu knife.

Hey Guys,
Went to the North Point Flea Market today and picked up a Marklin starter set #2927A.
It has a 0-6-0 tank engine, and two 4 wheel passenger coaches.
Not a bad deal for $35.00,with the box,and transformer.(too bad it has the euro plug)
So I get it home and dig out my other Marklin track, and trans, and it runs great after a lil' cleaning and lube.

MB,
I'm not going to use the transformer that came with todays new set,it's just not worth it.
I have a newer, and more powerful transformer that I use.

Another good day at the garage sales:

The John Bull runs fine, and only cost 5 dollars. The radio behind it was another bargain--3 dollars for a working AM/FM/Cassette old time radio replica. I almost slept in, but I'm glad I didn't.
