Just curious - is Tyco's plastic more brittle than the usual polystyrene? I am working on my low-nose C630 project and found the body I was sawing kind of crumbly. Maybe it is because I am using the metalized Golden Eagle body for my project.

I have cut 4 Tyco shells for customs and thought they cut nicely and quickly. You may be right about the chromed finish of the GE.

AlcoFan's supposition sounds likely. I have cut a GP20 shell recently. Nothing unusual that I noted. It was easier to cut than the old Athearn shells.

It's possible that it was exposed to oil that isn't plastic compatible, or some other chemical that made it brittle. I have a number of scrap Chattanooga boilers that have been made brittle by whatever was used in the smoke unit.

Brake fluid makes certain plastics brittle. Did you strip the paint?
