I've been wanting to try resin casting to reproduce some building kits I have. I finally got a hold of two TYCOKIT No.7771 Repair Shops - both were incomplete individually, but I was able to make one complete original kit.
But I began to wonder if I could create duplicates of the parts I was missing - and build a second Repair Shop using the left over original parts.
Has anyone done (or know of an Internet website discussing) Resin Casting - you know, the basics. Creating molds, etc.
I have a couple other out of production kits I'd love to make one or two more of for my layout.
Thanks!

Molding and casting is fun; the hardest part is the initial $ outlay for the mold rubber and resin. Micro-Mark has molding supplies, and they're having a sale right now. I'd go with the starter kit.

Here's a Model Railroader tutorial: http://www.micromark.com/html_pages/instructions/82708mrrresinart.pdf
There's a Yahoo group devoted to it...

...and plenty of other how-to's and videos online. http://www.youtube.com/user/SmoothOnInc

Good luck.

Wow Nelson! But where was this info when I started casting about 20 yrs ago? I could have saved a lot of time and money with the info/links you provided.
Yes you can easily duplicate parts. But you must clean up your original part very well. Any damage or flaw with the part will be duplicated as well. Best to remove all burrs, flash, and mold seams before making the mold.

Has anyone tried to cast any of the parts missing from Tyco engines when we buy them? Things like horns, truck sideframes, dynamic brake hatches for the GP20's, or...?

No reason why you couldn't Mike, and once you have the mold you can make as many spares as you like.

Great! Those instruction videos were awesome. I should have tried this a long time ago. Thanks for the suggestions - will try the starter kit to get my feet wet. Give some new life to some old kits that otherwise would have wound up in the parts box.
