I have a '5405' 4-6-2 Heavy Pacific "CNJRR -831" & the photo below shows that the spring that tensions up the front truck is missing. But for the life of me I can't see where the other end of the spring attaches once its attached to the truck on the claw to the left of the truck attachment bolt..
Any thoughts?

Also, the power pickup from the small bent contact inside the top left truck wheel I haven't struck before - what era were they using this??
Thanks
Tanked

There may have been a piece that clipped into the 2 small holes in the bottom of the frame.
I have one of those locos, when I got it the spring was missing also.
I formed a V shaped mount that I glued in the 2 holes to attach the spring to.

That was what I was considering. Although I have run it for 1.5 hrs now on some rough laid track & it hasn't hopped off the rails yet. may not need it as the truck has a bit of weight in it, being diecast.
Semi opened Loco up & found it had a can motor with a small flywheel , so must be later than 1970's??

Mine was a basket case and was missisng the can motor. It also had a problem with the gearing.
Here's a thread on how I remotored and regeared it.

Tanked,

Yes, that's the late 90's revised version of the Pacific. The two holes in the bottom plate are where the brake shoes locate, which I assume you don't have. You may be right about them eliminating the spring due to the weight of the truck, but a spring would also make the electrical pickup more reliable.

Nice looking unit.

Ray, I saw an announcement a few years ago that NWSL had a replacement gearbox for the newer Pacific, but all I can find on their site is the regear kit for the old one.

Update: I just found this in their Seattle Car & Foundry PDF.

Ok, thanks Nelson.
I have to agree with Ray - this is a lovely smooth runner. I think I stumbled on an unrun & in running it in it is now circulating slow & steady, no hiccups, will become a favorite quite quickly.
