I was looking in Lowe's today, and found something interesting:

It's stone spray paint It cost 8.98 per bottle. It's kind of interesting. It really does look like stone, and it has the same texture. I am using traditional ballast, but I tested this kind on a scrap piece of track:
I personally like the look of traditional ballast better, but if you could cover up the rails you could get some decent looking ballast with the spray. You would just have to wipe off the spray on the ties. It takes 4-6 hours to dry, though.

| Huh, that's interesting. Might have some applications in "back of the layout" areas. I would spray the paint onto the roadbed BEFORE putting the track down - that would probably look more convincing. Maybe even like Kato/Bachmann "ballasted" EZ-track?

Yeah, good idea. Life Like makes some Power-Loc track that would probably look good sprayed.

good idea but I'd recommend using the spray onto a cork roadbed BEFORE you lay the tracks

I saw that stuff looking for weathering paints one day. Yea I think spraying before hand would be the way to go. Then maybe dry brush a color over the tracks afterwards (like a dark brown or grimy black). And I think that would look pretty decent if you weren't crazy about putting down ballast.
Actually, I bet the stuff would work even better at creating roads on a layout. Little bit of masking, spray then and you'd be set.

Chris, I was thinking it might make a good looking gravel driveway. Because it would be a small area, and because your attention would wander to lots of other details, the almost perfect appearance would be acceptable.
Just a thought anyway!
