I don't have a great amount of experience with Varney, other than reading about them when I was growing up.
Here is my project, of which I have found out what everyone is talking about, is the metal frame is totally fragmented.
But, it will run the rails again...

Interesting project. I've been wanting to try modifying an Athearn Hi-F frame to replace the Varney frame but haven't gotten started on the project yet. It would require cutting out the rear bolster for the truck, widdening the opening for the rear power truck to fit and cutting out the center of the fuel tank for the driveshaft. Or you could build a frame frome scratch. This is a chassis I built from scratch years ago for the same shell. I even built the trucks from scratch.

That picture is an original ad for Varney's SW locomotive and their newest drive train done by John Allen on his G&D. The dino is "Old #13", very familiar to us older modelers. Something else to note is that he made his own figures, beeswax molded onto wire armatures which were then carved, painted with white shoe polish, then painted with artist oils. Several of them were copied by Preiser and Life-Like.

Wow. That's amazing. He made his own figures, and then companies wanted copies...now that's something else!

| Getting back to topic, the easiest way to repair that Varney F7 would be to round up an early Life-Like F7 with plastic frame and just swap it out. Unfortunately those aren't all that common anymore either.

Your right, I have been looking for a couple of those Life-Like F7 chassis with no luck in finding them. Another chassis that will fit under the Varney F7 is the Pennline chassis. Probably just as hard to find though.

Mike,
I have a working chassis for that loco. I have no need for it.

This is the best idea, throwing away the plastic frame and get a metal under this nice shell. so you have a original one!
