I bought an auction on Ebay a couple of years ago, it was a lot of 4 or 5 cars as I remember. This was one of them. It came in an AHM box but I don't believe it's the right one. The insert isn't quite the right size for this car. Besides, it has CTC stamped on the bottom.
Here's a few pics to aid in the id of this train. Any info is appreciated.

It is an AHM. I've had one a few times over the years. They don't come around very often in the box...perhaps someone did a swap-er-roo on the insert?
Oh yeah...if you ever come across the offset-cupola "Tyco" Conrail caboose, it also has "CTC" on the chassis, but as we know...it is a Tyco mold.
And the outsourcing web grows wider...[:0]

Thanks. I'll recheck the insert, I've been going through hundreds of trains for an inventory. The box was the silver AHM box which is very common but there is no indication the box was ever labeled for any specific car. The box is generic.
Was this car a part of a set and/or sold individually? Was it sold only by Woolworth or available like any normal AHM set? I like this car and would like to know more on the history of it. I've only seen 2 of these in the last 2 years which tells me it's definately one that is harder to find.
Does anyone have any dollar value estimates on this car? It's a solid example, no chips, all steps intact, the slightest paint rub on a couple of ladder rungs and it really looks better in person than in the pics.
My camera picks up everything and seems to magnifiy the slightest imperfection. Until I looked at the pics I did not know there was a hair in that last picture.
Thanks again.

Good Question. The Hong Kong origin mark looks just like TYCO's, but I've never encountered anything marked CTC. Anyone know what CTC stands for???
NYC...the Woolworth Box Car is really nicely done...Very Cool. Never saw one before.

Pure conjecture here, but here goes. Maybe CTC is the Hong Kong based company that made all the trains for Tyco, Bachmann, Pemco, etc. that originated in Hong Kong.
Tyco, Bachmann and Pemco for example all had the 62' Triple Dome Tankers. They are identical molds except for the "manufacturer" stamp and of course the paint schemes.
It would be too simple if it stood for Chinese Train Company. Let me see what I can dig up. I've actually baffled the forum here, I somehow feel proud of myself.
I have another surprise which I should be receiving around Christmas and I think it will raise a few Tyco brows.

| I believe CTC stands for Cyprus Trading Company which is a partner/subsidiary company of FW Woolworth. So, CTC is actually the company Woolworth used to tag it's product and is not a company located in Hong Kong. It's really Woolworth but they used that same darn Hong Kong train manufacturer everyone else was using in the day.

I am also creating an inventory in preperation to sell my Tyco stuff and came accross a Woolworth 100 anniversary car. It is in an AHM box but the insert isn't right. It is nicely done and has CTC stamped on the bottom of the chasis and resembles a Tyco .

Hey you know what... now that this post percolated to the top again, I look at the car more closely... and it DOES look a lot like the Tyco one.
Look at the roof, and look at the pictures on my "Tyco Vs. AHM" post.
The CTC chassis also looks suspect.
I would actually be curious to see the INSIDE of the boxcar mold. If it has the two big pins to help retain the weight against the chassis, among other spotting features?
And how big is the hole for the brakewheel?

I had an idea and went into the boxes here thinking it might have been part of a promo set that AHM put out so I checked and my 7-11, Frosted Flakes, Ray-O-Vac, Lipton Soup, Scott Tissue, Eggo, Wonder Bread and Keebler all have a different chasis, and some say AHM so there is no help there, Sorry.

OK... looking at the woolworth pics YET AGAIN.... (sorry obtrey, you bounced this topic active and I kept fogetting to look back on my own), the roof and ends are VERY SIMILAR to Tyco... but I am convinced the sides are NOT at all similar. On that Woolworth car's sides:
- The sill is completely straight/flat
- There are no tackboards, doorstops, or jacking pads on the carside
- The doorlatch is different (missing?)
The chassis/frame, however, looks to be a dead-ringer ripoff, right down to the ejector pin marks.
If I ever get a version of this car, I will add it and revise the AHM v. Tyco post. But until then you can compare Todd's side picture, to mine, and see the differences yourself:

Funny how these train companies always "borrow" just enough from each other to make life easy, but not be accused of total plagiarism... [B)]

| I've checked my PM inbox and outbox for the person who PM'd me years ago about their grandmother working at Woolworths. I don't have the message anymore. Could that person please PM me again to remind me who they are. Thanks.
