Hi All,
I have an all metal flat car from Mantua. It is all black with no railroad markings. The trucks are metal with (rib back wheels?). Someone had put in Kadee coupler box's with the new style couplers. I think whoever put in the coupler box's had to cut the metal to do it. So my questions are, 1 when was it made?, 2 Did they have to cut the metal to put in the coupler box's?, 3 were the original couplers body mounted?, 4 What did it carry for a load? Any thoughts would be great.
I will have other cars that I need info. on, But I will post them seperately
Thanks Mike

The original all-metal Mantua cars did have cast-on draft-gear boxes. But they were very narrow and designed to accept only the Mantua loop-and-hook couplers. Eventually Mantua developed their own unique horn-hook couplers that also fit (bobber cabeese are a common source for these).
If someone wanted to install a Kadee AND have it operate properly, they'd've had to make modifications, such as what you see.
Not sure on dates exactly, but could be from the late 40's through early 50's. I would have to research to be sure. And in those days it may not even have come with a load, and was probably painted by the modeler.

This might be your flat car listed in a 1948 Mantua Catalog. You may want to browse through the older catalogs to see if it is listed?
