No sure if you guys saw this post on the Trains.com forum. A fellow has completely repowered a Chattanooga Locomotive. http://cs.trains.com/trccs/forums/t/153238.aspx
Quite the feat!

So I'm not the only insane modeler. Here is how I did it. http://www.2guyzandsumtrains.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=558.html

Yup, that's the same guy who did the tutorial about replacing the worms in IHC diesels. I'll ask him to join this one so he can join the discussion.

Neat idea, maybe I'll try something similar on my Chatta-noogie loco.

Yes, I did. It is a pretty decent running locomotive. Lots of work involved but it was worth it. There are a few photos of the finished loco on the 3rd page of that thread. http://www.2guyzandsumtrains.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=558/postdays=0/postorder=asc/start=30.html

Sweet!! I know I'm too old to use that word but it is sweet. I would not have thought it was from humble but worthy origins. Every body needs to check it out!! Resourceful and artistic.

Ray, how did those gears work out? Is the mesh quiet?
I never would have thought about using an old counter worm.

The gears mesh great. I did lap them with a fine lapping compound. Some people don't like brass on brass gears but if they are set up right they are just as or quieter than plastic or nylon gears.

That one doesn't smoke but the one I remotored with a TERP drive does.

Has anyone had any luck with those smoke units? All I can get is the faintest wisps at full throttle no matter what fluid I try. I don't remember them working any better back in the 70's. Besides, either the original Tyco fluid, or something many people substituted for it (like 3-in-1) attacked the plastic, as I've found many Chattanoogas with brittle, crumbling boilers.
Ray - I've read that dissimilar gear materials are better, at least in the case of metal gears, like steel/brass, or steel/Delrin, but I'm not sure why that's thought to be true. Brass will always strip before steel does. Anyway, I thought those tape recorder counter worms were steel, but maybe they're really plated brass.

When I hook mine up seperately it smokes more than a yard-sale lawnmower, but once I try it in the loco I can't get anyting out of it. I've checked and rechecked all the wiring, and I know it's not a short because the motor runs...ugh.
At least nothing on mine is cracked.

That's always deceptive... a smoke unit can seem really healthy when you test it standing still, but when the loco is moving it gets diluted, and the Chattanoogas don't even have a tube to route the smoke directly up the stack.
