Back in the fall I picked up a five car set of North Coast Limited streamliners. I'd always assumed that it was a stock paint scheme (as the AHM box was marked NP), but I can't seem to find anymore of them. I've checked train shows, ebay and HOSeeker, and come up with nothing. I know AHM sold Northern Pacific streamliners, but does anyone know if they were ever done in North Coast Limited paint? The lettering/numbering looks like it may be decals, but it's hard to tell. Here's a picture:

The lettering, etc definitely appear to be decals. There's thin raised area under all the lettering, and you can make out the edge of the film around the "box" that surrounds it. The thin white stripe almost appears that way too but it may just be the lighting in your picture.

I don't know the extent to which AHM might have used decals on their equipment.... I would say this should have been uncommon (especially for lettering) when they were in their prime. Even Tyco got away from this in the 60's. Maybe a random logo or something could be a decal... but not the lettering.

My gut says "very nicely done custom" BUT I don't have experience with AHM passenger cars, so I could be wrong.

That's what I was thinking too, but the paint job almost seemed too well done to be a custom. Comparing it to my AHM CN set, it's obvious that the lettering was not applied in the same way (decals vs. stamped), but I thought the lack of interior detail on the NP set may indicate an older product.

Either way, it's still a beautiful set. Kinda disappointing though that there are no more to be found

The blue and white ones? Those one looks really cool AHM (Rivarossi) streamliners are probably some of the best out there (in my opinion). I'd love to get some of the brown and orange Illinois Central cars

http://www.ustrainco.com/Passenger_Cars_IHC_list.htm

I googled around and found this link showing IHC NP North Coast Limited cars listed.

I don't know if this will help you...

Thanks guys.

Mike: I saw a set of those on ebay...wondered if maybe the person painted these cars to go with a newer IHC set? I'll definitely have to look into those...see if they match my cars

Tanked: Thanks. Let me know what you find.

I think you may have a Custom set, or a special edition??
My NP 1930 Observation car (Box # 6441),(same carriage shape as yrs], is clean along the lower side & only has the number 557 twice where you have # 312. No other wording apart from Northern Pacific where you have it.
Another difference seems to be the yellow side striping: I have one above the words 'Northern Pacific, one under those words, one 'through' the lower windows, where the green & black/very dark brown?? paint meet & one under the windows. Yours seems to have fewer stripes.
I have to head out, but will post a photo later this evening

Those are the ones that always come up when I search for NP cars. The boxes that my cars came in were factory marked as Northern Pacific, so I suspect that that's how the cars were originally painted. Thanks for the pic...I'll have to keep my eyes open for some of those

Hey Mike. Thanks for the link! I think I came across that site a while back during my searches. It's a neat batch of cars he has made. I'm sure it looks great when running on a layout.

There are some commercially available models of the NCL now...Walthers makes a set, although that doesnt really help me. I'll keep looking though...I do have an airbrush, so a little custom painting is always an option

Hey TycoJonny. Did IHC ever produce the cars in this scheme? I know that these particular cars are made by Rivarossi and imported by AHM (they came in their original AHM boxes).

EDIT: nevermind....blanked out for a second there. I just remembered the IHC cars had already been brought up in this thread.
