I have one of those small red 1890's??, 2-4-0 old timer locos that seems to not be happy in the valve gear area. It is not wanting to turn the valve gear over freely, even when I pull the motor out [which is in the cab, not in the tender] The gears seem ok.
I am wondering about the quartering - if the loco is standing with its cow catcher facing towards the right & we are looking at the right side, & the back geared wheel has its drive flange [for want of a better term], in the 12 0'clock position, then if i 'lock' the wheels & turn the loco around to face the left & look at the left hand side, then the drive flange is at the 3 o'clock position. Does that relative positioning seem correct?? Can someone check their 2-4-0? Thanks Tanked

Yup, if the right hand drivers are at the 12:00 position, the left drivers will be at 3. I don't know where your bind is, since these locos don't have any valve gear, only main and piston rods. Maybe there's a burr inside one of the cylinders, or the crosshead guide is bent. I would run it slowly upsidedown and look for any binding, and check the axle gear for any wear or damage.

Nelson Yes, the lack of valve gear had me scratching my head as to what was sticking as you can't get much simpler than a main & piston rods. Burrs could be it - I got this off ebay a while back & looking it over carefully I would say it has never run. Brushes are long, no marks or cr-p on commutator face, gear teeth are clean. It needed oiling. I will check out what you suggested. Thanks Tanked

Short update - solved it last night - 2 issues - the cross guide was slightly bent in on 1 side, causing the binding. erratic running on the track i traced to the contact system. Although the Loco looked as though it had never been run, someone had played around with the contacts & bent 1 back just enough that it sometimes lost contact momentarily. It is running in well. Glad you solved it. These later versions with the motor in the cab had no tender pickup, so they are probably prone to stalling more than the tender drives. Does it pick up power from all 4 drivers? They would have to eliminate the traction tires for that arrangement.
