Aye...this was the worst train show I've ever been to.
There were maybe 20 people there total, and maybe only 2 or 3 selling HO stuff. No cork road bed, very little rolling stock...nothing I was hoping to get.
Rather than leave empty-handed, I did pick up some neat junk equipment. Just an old Mehano RS-2 painted and gutted to look long abandoned, and a Rock Island gondola full of scrap. /tyco/forum/uploaded/MM 1498/IMG_1501.jpg /tyco/forum/uploaded/MM 1498/IMG_1502.jpg /tyco/forum/uploaded/MM 1498/IMG_1503.jpg
I also picked up an Athearn SD9, because it was looking GREAT with it's extra detail parts and weathering. It's been hard-wired, but the headlight was removed in the process. I put a new one in, and it's gonna run long hood forward. Because that's how they should be run! /tyco/forum/uploaded/MM 1498/IMG_1504.jpg /tyco/forum/uploaded/MM 1498/IMG_1505.jpg /tyco/forum/uploaded/MM 1498/IMG_1507.jpg /tyco/forum/uploaded/MM 1498/IMG_1509.jpg
Now the hobby show was a completely different story. It was, without a doubt, the coolest show I've ever been to. No real trains to speak of, except for a 1/8th scale, live steam Royal Hudson. And a steam powered Climax loco...way too cool...
The show was mainly aircraft, with seemingly infinite numbers of aircraft model kits, and real planes providing an amazing backdrop for the show.
There were also some real cool LEGO models, including a Trogdor for GIC... /tyco/forum/uploaded/MM 1498/DSCF4734.jpg
And there were RC battleships, that shot BB pellets!
But the best part of the whole show for me was the miniature steam engines. Pictures wouldn't do them justice, so I shot some video clips.
Other than that, it was just dolls and doll houses...they were very well made, but didn't recieve an ounce of my attention.
Check out this photo album, rather than clog up the forum with pictures: http://s379.photobucket.com/albums/oo231/MM1498/Hobby%20Show/ Or see the simple slideshow I made on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDaijB4jYK0&fmt=18
The museum site is worth a look as well: http://www.shearwateraviationmuseum.ns.ca/
All in all, a good day, and I can't wait to get that SD9 going on my new layout. I dunno why, but it's become my favourite locomotive already. Let's just hope it performs as well as it looks...

| I'm a huge fan of the BLE, very cool find with the SD9! If that's the same as the one my friend owns that thing will tow anything forever. Its funny Bessemer's real SD38's have been doing the scrap runs around here lately long hood forward. Legos are awesome too I could do a whole topic on that alone haha. Nice stuff Matt!

Cool engines you bought! The weathering on both looks great. And those battleships with the BB guns...haha...I'd love to have one of those

think I'd rather have a battleship that uses a boat motor & shoots water cool Alco Now stick it on a long forgotton & abandoned siding with weeds & trees arond it

That reminds me, I neglected to mention my new computer I picked up last weekend. It even came with a flight simulator and train simulator...best part about it was the price: FREE!
However, there is good reason for that. It's from 1991 and is not even running Windows. MS-DOS 5.0 IN YO FACE!
Yeah, it's got great games, including Microsoft Flight Simulator 3 (1988) and PC-RR. (1984) Even a funky dot-matrix printer. And it takes regular letter size paper! Maybe I'll show you guys the cutting edge 1984 train graphics...sometime later!

I got the SD on a test track and found that it's a really lousy performer...using Ray's Blue Box repair guide to get it running like new.

I can't for the life of me get this loco to run correctly. I don't get it, the motor runs great on its own, and there are no cracked gears or anything like that.
Hmm. I've since removed the motor brushes and worm gears, and put it into dummy service. Which it still doesn't want to do.
One problem is that it won't take 18' curves. But even on the straight sections it's a pain. Ughhhh.....

If the motor runs ok and all the internal gear looks alright. Is there something wrong with the axles? It should at least be able to go straight. Something in the trucks screwed up? On a side note my friend picked up a Bessemer SD38 (A Athearn also) the other day he's been after it forever. However the 3 axle trucks were just too much, we had trouble getting it onto even the widest turns This doesn't bod well for when Athearn releases the Chessie C4400 in the fall. Though the engine we got to replace the SD38 is pretty awesome, I'll post it in a few days

Maybe I'll just stick it on a siding and make it look pretty.
