So I picked up the box and inserts with 5 cars from the Boston & Maine steam set - box says B&M PC SET on the end - and looked in my Greenberg to try to figure out when it was made.

They list only one B&M steam set, even show the catalog preproduction picture (which has someone else's steam loco and a Varney hopper in it), then say the set was never officially released. ??

My B&M Pacific fits the insert just fine, it has the rare B&M caboose, stock car, pulpwood car, boxcar, three-dome tank, and I put a B&M hopper in it to fill it out for now that matches the era of the other cars.

So what is it? There's no catalog number on the box end.

I really need to find my Krause Guide with the blue cover and see if it has any info on the sets. I misplaced it here in the house like three years ago.

Somehow I'm thinking this is about Athearn, not Tyco... but that's fine. I was just confused at first. I mean Tyco never had a three-dome tank until the infamous brown-box model.

But then Athearn never had a Pacific?

Would like to know more, myself... but I'm afraid I can't help you.

Well, I did post in the Athearn section?

Yes, Athearn had a Pacific from about 1959 through 1964, with at least three officially-released drive variations plus a never released Hi-F rubberband drive - retooling because it ran poorly kept it from appearing as a Lionel HO item. The engine is clearly pictured in both the Krause and the Greenberg's Athearn guides. Heck you can read previous posts in this board with some discussion of the Athearn steam engines.

I just broke down and bought another copy of the Standard Guide to Athearn Trains, which covers through 1997, because one of the authors has a few copies listed on eBay with a $14.99 buy it now price and free Priority Mail shipping at that. I figure if I buy another, mine will turn up not long after, either way I'll have one on the shelf to look up some of these oddball pieces.

D'oh! I forgot we even had an Athearn section because it is so rarely used... Plus I usually just use the recent topics, which never show the parent forum. Honestly I rarely ever know where a topic is hosted.

I knew Athearn had steamers in the past, but to this day I have never seen one. So I forgot what it was called. Have never seen the Krause or Greenberg guides either, although I have wanted to for some time. Wasn't trying to be snarky, just honestly confused. Still can't help you though. Sorry for the confusion.

I've had at least four of all three steam engines and have several of each now, plus a couple boxes of basket cases. You've probably seen them and just not knew what they were at the time, they're scarce, but not impossible.

B&M is the hardest one to find. I have a boxed B&O passenger set and at least 2 or 3 of the engines but only 1 B&M.

Standard Guide ended up not much help - there's no catalog number on this set and while they show the same set the Greenberg does they show it as a 4-car and caboose set. So I'm still not sure what I have.

Hi LVRR.
In your Greenberg's Guide to Athearn trains. Go to page 142. Sets number 4180, 4181, & 4182 were not made because they were the Hi F drive engines that were not made.
Now look on page 144 set number 6156 This is the first B & M set made cica 1961-62. Then go to page 145 set 6256. Both sets were 6 car sets (5 cars + caboose) but had a different group of cars.
One of these sets should match what you have.
The Santa Fe & the B&O Pacific steam both had Passenger sets. But, The B & M had no such set because Athearn did not make any B & M Passenger Cars. Carl

6155/56 - Box, stock, Chemical Tank, Pickle Car, caboose.
6255/56 - Box, stock, Chemical Tank, Pickle Car, Flatcar with piggyback trailer, caboose.

Niether one is a match.

FWIW, I also have another set from this era, a 6238 New Haven F7 A-A Six Car Freight Set (which I've kept waiting for another lighted caboose shell to turn up, this came to me with the caboose badly warped and the boxcar slightly warped). In '62 a vaccuformed plastic insert was used with the sets but I'm not sure when they went to it.

The 6155 Santa Fe version of the set is illustrated on page 242 of the Krause book - with only 5 cars: Chemical tank, open pickle car, flatcar with airplane(!) and stock car. The description of same on that page says the set should have a boxcar, and a flat car with one van instead of the airplane car.

Either way, none match this set, and while it's possible someone swapped some cars around, the cars are all era correct and have been together with this box for a very long time, seemingly long enough to predate the era of these pieces having enough collectability to be playing games and breaking up sets.

I posted the whole works on eBay in the meantime just to see if anyone else can fill in the blanks on it - did it on a 15 cents to list day.
