This dash 9 by athern has no problem w/ a 17 car load .i would like to see some other heavy haulers ,and i need to ask does running @ slow speed with a big load hurt these motors , or fast w light loads ,what does more harm?

My powered pair of Athearn C44-9ws haul a similar load---actually ran out of cars at 35 so I couldn't tell how much more they could go. That was with 1.75% grades. I know of 4 at the club that did 75 cars, again the lack of more cars kept it from being longer. So long as you're locos can slip (one of the reasons I hate traction tires) under load, it shouldn't be an issue...just monitor the temps for the first few laps and if they really have to work at it.

thats is amazing ,i often add extra motive ,if they match in basic speed. ive noticed the newer power packs suck compared to say the tyco ,i have a techII dual cab its steady but not enough, my old tyco engines run great on that 18 volt surge. i can pull more cars. im new to this site is there a contest for longest train using 1 loco?

Say, that's a neat idea! Of course one of the moderators is who you should ask, (probably romcat) but I think it's a cool idea. Get some basic rules and restrictions going and it could be a blast!

Anybody else think so?

Erich, those were from about 1974, and were made by Roco. I got one in UP for my 11th birthday. I don't think it ran as well as the metal PM-1 trucks did, and the truck plastic was brittle. I think that was Consolidated Foods cost-saver before they launched the PT.

The construction of this loco is very simlpe (no frame, plastic wheels for insulation, no window glass etc. but i like it and i added it to my Vintage parts. maybe i find a second i will buy this too! on mine the trucks are OK no brittle (happens to some but not to all of a serie). for this age it runs good without any rumble!

ADAM: only one truck powered, but i heard that there was a version with 2 powered.

******Pulling Power. *******
**An interesting subject! If some oldtimers like myself get involved you youngsters will learn a thing or two. Like with real locomotives traction power isn't derived from a motors torque alone. Adhersion and weight on the drivers also add to the equasion. With this little bit of information you can become dangerously efficent in selecting and converting motive power to this task.

tech II are good power packs but do not have high voltage for dc train operation. I have the dual cab that is low voltage output also. MRC does have power supplies with 20-22 volts dc operation.
